You know, I see the terms thrown around a lot, but I really don't know exactly what a "hipster" is, or what "scene" means (outside the context of a play or movie, that is). You could probably dismiss it as my getting older, but I can pretty much guarantee you that I wouldn't have known what those labels meant when I was a teenager, either.

And now for something related to an interest of mine that's totally unhip and probably un-scene as well, Oz books!
We're proud to present on the WB, three book reviews that no one will read! )

If you like Frank Black, you might want to check out the FrankBlack.NET podcast. There's a preview of "Dog Sleep," a song from Frank's upcoming album Fastman Raiderman (and no, I don't like that title much either). It's pretty cool, I guess. Very horn-heavy, which is unusual for Frank.

Finally, here's a brief list of things I need to do in the coming week (if I have the time):

1. Get new tires for my car.
2. Get my oil changed.
3. Make a dentist's appointment.

Wasn't that interesting? :P

Does anyone ever eat just one of...no, not Lay's potato chips, but those instant oatmeal packets? They're so small. I usually will eat three, and I'm generally still hungry afterwards.

I bought tickets today to see Neko Case in Philadelphia in April. The show will be at the Trocadero instead of the Tin Angel. It's cool that Neko is moving up in the world, but I liked being able to sit down for her shows. It's weird how the really small and really big venues have seats, but the intermediate ones (i.e., the ones that host most of the artists I want to see) don't. At least the Trocadero is preferable to the TLA. I'm pretty sure the TLA is bigger (although I've heard people say otherwise), but it's way down on South Street, out of the way of both public transportation and parking lots.

The Sam Goody in the mall is closing down, and having a clearance sale. Even with the sale, though, just about everything STILL costs more than it does anywhere else. Gee, I wonder why they aren't doing much business? :P

Okay, [livejournal.com profile] rockinlibrarian tagged me for this, so I guess I'll do it:

Guilt
What is yours?
Explain yourself
Culinary: Fast food breakfast sandwiches I know they're really bad for you, but I love those things. Especially the bacon, egg, and cheese bagels.
Literary: Choose Your Own Adventure knock-offs When I was a kid, I bought several Narnia and Super Mario Bros. ones. I've come across some of my old ones recently, and they're still pretty fun.
Audiovisual: American Idol TV shows count, right? I think the fact that it's something Beth and I watch together is an important contributing factor.
Musical: Can't really think of any I wouldn't say I'm ashamed of any of my music, but I guess it really depends on the company I'm in when discussing it.
Celebrity: Again, can't really think of any Actually, I guess Weird Al might count, not because I'm at all ashamed of liking him, but because I think I might have gone a little too far in my obsession back when I was younger. I mean, he was a major factor in my wanting to grow a mustache, which really didn't work for me.

Now I tag:-

This evening, [livejournal.com profile] bethje and I saw a burlesque show at the World Cafe Live in Philadelphia. The World Famous Potani Sisters were billed as the headliner, but they actually only did three dances. Other performers were the acrobatic Trixie Little, the tall Kitten de Ville, and a girl named Penny something (I can't remember her full stage name, and she only did one performance). The MC was Tyler Fyre, who, in addition to announcements and jokes, did some sword-swallowing. And the main reason we decided to go in the first place was that Corn Mo was there. I think he knew some of the performers from his time in the circus. Really, Corn Mo seems to know everybody. I've seen him open for and perform with They Might Be Giants and Ben Folds, and now this. He now rivals Erin McKeown and Neko Case as far as the number of acts with which I've seen him perform. Anyway, in between the dances, he performed several of his regular songs, and told the usual stories in between songs. He did use a little more blue material this time, though. He told about how he ejaculated while running to catch the bus, and how he saw Benjamin Franklin's sex moves when he had used astral projection to travel back in time. (He had told the astral projection story before, but not the sexual part.) He also performed "Burning Love" with the main band, the Fisherman Xylophonic Orchestra, as an accompaniment to the last dance by the Pontani Sisters. They then played "Cradle Of Love" during the curtain call. So, yeah, it was my first burlesque show, and I thought it was pretty fun.

The venue was quite nice. They have tables, and serve expensive food. The Minus 5 are actually going to be playing there next month, although, as I mentioned in an earlier post, I most likely won't be able to attend that show. In finding the place, I found out that there are actually two levels to part of Walnut Street near University City. That's kind of cool, albeit confusing as well.

I have tomorrow off, which is cool. I should probably try to get new tires for my car while Beth is at school.
