Girls, Girls, Aliens
Feb. 19th, 2006 11:33 pmThis evening,
bethje and I saw a burlesque show at the World Cafe Live in Philadelphia. The World Famous Potani Sisters were billed as the headliner, but they actually only did three dances. Other performers were the acrobatic Trixie Little, the tall Kitten de Ville, and a girl named Penny something (I can't remember her full stage name, and she only did one performance). The MC was Tyler Fyre, who, in addition to announcements and jokes, did some sword-swallowing. And the main reason we decided to go in the first place was that Corn Mo was there. I think he knew some of the performers from his time in the circus. Really, Corn Mo seems to know everybody. I've seen him open for and perform with They Might Be Giants and Ben Folds, and now this. He now rivals Erin McKeown and Neko Case as far as the number of acts with which I've seen him perform. Anyway, in between the dances, he performed several of his regular songs, and told the usual stories in between songs. He did use a little more blue material this time, though. He told about how he ejaculated while running to catch the bus, and how he saw Benjamin Franklin's sex moves when he had used astral projection to travel back in time. (He had told the astral projection story before, but not the sexual part.) He also performed "Burning Love" with the main band, the Fisherman Xylophonic Orchestra, as an accompaniment to the last dance by the Pontani Sisters. They then played "Cradle Of Love" during the curtain call. So, yeah, it was my first burlesque show, and I thought it was pretty fun.
The venue was quite nice. They have tables, and serve expensive food. The Minus 5 are actually going to be playing there next month, although, as I mentioned in an earlier post, I most likely won't be able to attend that show. In finding the place, I found out that there are actually two levels to part of Walnut Street near University City. That's kind of cool, albeit confusing as well.
I have tomorrow off, which is cool. I should probably try to get new tires for my car while Beth is at school.
