I can't be having with this
Feb. 17th, 2006 11:58 pmToday, I watched the animated version of Terry Pratchett's Wyrd Sisters. I think it was largely of Saturday morning cartoon quality, both in terms of animation and voices. For the most part, I didn't find them all that appealing. I did think Granny Weatherwax's voice did a good job; and, while not all of the performance for Duke Felmet was that great, his mad rants were decently done. King Verence was also quite accurately rendered. The whole thing was a very faithful adaptation of the book. Of course, movies are rarely as good as the books they're based on, especially when a lot of the humor is in the writing style and asides. Still, they kept in most of the best scenes, including Hwel's playwriting and the "lawks" bit. On the other hand, I would have liked to have seen other ghosts besides Verence and Champot, and omitting the Macbeth-based cauldron scene was an odd decision. I did like the brief appearances by familiar Discworld characters, including Dibbler, Chrysoprase, the Librarian, and the Duck Man (although I'm pretty sure the latter isn't supposed to have an eyepatch). Overall, it could have been much better, but it was still worth seeing. I'd like to see the Soul Music cartoon done by the same people, but it doesn't appear to be available on Netflix.
I continued my DVD-watching with Paradise, the concert video from the Dresden Dolls. As far as concert videos go, I found this one to be very good. The band has a lot of energy live, and the performances are a lot of fun to watch. There's also a documentary called "A Life in the Day of the Dresden Dolls," which is mostly quite mundane. Far from glamorizing the band members' lives, it shows Amanda Palmer untangling headphones and dropping something in the toilet. It's a little slow, and I doubt I'll watch it anywhere near as often as the actual concert footage, but it's pretty cool nonetheless. I was amused by the comment some guy made about how he wouldn't like the Dolls' look if they weren't so talented musically, because it makes him think of mimes. I'm definitely adding the Dolls to the list of bands/artists I want to see live.
Speaking of artists I want to see live, the Minus 5 are playing a show in Philadelphia on a day when I'll probably be working. That sucks, since Scott McCaughey is pretty high on my want-to-see list. Since the Minus 5 seem to be gaining in popularity, though, they'll probably be back around these parts before too much longer. If it turns out I'm not working and there are still tickets left, I'll go to the show that's coming up soon, but I don't hold out much hope for that.
