So, [livejournal.com profile] bethje and I got around to watching The Godfather last night. Like Citizen Kane, it's one of those movies I wanted to watch to increase my cultural literacy, by which I mean "understand the innumerable parodies." {g} For what it's worth, I don't think there were as many direct Simpsons references to Godfather as to Kane, but there were several, including the spoof of the James Caan tollbooth scene earlier this season. And yes, I also liked the movie on its own merits, but I'm a horrible reviewer, so I usually just go off on tangents when talking about films I've seen. {g} I do have to wonder why there were sometimes subtitles when characters spoke Italian, but other times there weren't.

I heard something on the radio about Verizon DSL being down in the Philadelphia area. That's what I use at home, but I haven't BEEN home recently, so I'm not sure whether it's down there or not. I hope it isn't, or that they get it fixed before then, since I have a bit of catching up to do as far as the Internet goes.

Finally, on my way to work today, I stopped by the $5 CD store, and bought copies of the Beatles' Let It Be (the original version, not the "Naked" one; maybe it should be called the "Clothed" version {g}) and a Robyn Hitchcock album.

Sweet. Which one?

It's called Respect. I actually knew a few of the songs before, because I downloaded some live tracks when I was subscribed to TMBG Unlimited. The studio versions seem a little more subdued.

And I forget, do you have many other Robyn Hitchcock albums? Respect is just about at the shark jumping point, although it does have a few good songs on it.

No, I don't have any of his other albums, although I did download some Live in Cambridge thing from eMusic (as I hinted in my last reply). I got Respect because it cost $5, but the fact that it isn't one of the better albums might be WHY it costs so little. I mean, why would anyone sell a really good album? I think the one Replacements album I picked up at the same store is generally considered to be one of their worst ones.

What would you say are Hitchcock's better albums?

My favorite ones are, as usual, the earlier ones:

Fegmania
I Often Dream Of Trains
Black Snake Diamond Role
Underwater Moonlight (Soft Boys)
Invisible Hits (Soft Boys)

And a few later ones that I like:

Eye
Queen Elvis
Moss Elixer
You And Oblivion (collection of rarities)
The Kershaw Sessions (alternate versions)

He has two greatest hits albums out, one on A&M and one on Rhino, and they're both really good starting points.

By all means avoid Perspex Island.
