I think there's a subsidy in the health care bill to help out people who are without jobs in paying for their insurance. At least, I hope so .... a lot of stuff got taken out of and put into that bill at the last minute.

There might well be, but I've been in situations before where I was employed but not provided with health insurance, and it was much cheaper for me not to have it.

I suspect Obama will lose some support when healthy young people realize the law now requires them to be insured or face federal charges ...

Especially when he said he wouldn't during his campaign, and as far as I know has yet to explain what's changed.

I suspect what changed is that his numbers people told him he couldn't fund the program without an influx of money from people who wouldn't actually be using it.

In his defense, I've heard for years that every new President is hit hard by the realities of governing when he gets those first few briefings -- things the average American has no idea about.

Yeah, that's why I can't blame Obama too much for not making good on all the change he promised. He was only elected President, after all, not Absolute Monarch. And I think he's good at being the public face of the nation, which is a large part of what the President actually DOES do.

That said, I don't know that anyone outside the insurance industry supports the mandate. Then again, the insurance industry has a lot of power in the government. Maybe Obama could only get them to make another concession if he threw in the mandate.
