Yeah, I've covered the topic of fundamentalist busybodies who oppose gay marriage before, and everyone has probably seen this video anyway, but I found it too crazy NOT to repost here. This group calls itself the National Organization for Marriage, although they make it clear they only like one sort of marriage, which makes it kind of a silly name. It would be like if I founded the National Association for Pizza, but I proposed destroying every kind of pizza except pepperoni.

And here's some more fun with NOM.

I personally like this one: “Who gets harmed? The people of this state who lose our right to define marriage as the union of husband and wife, that’s who. That is just not right.”

Wait, so we have a RIGHT to define words however we want to? Humpty Dumpty would be thrilled! I also have to admit being somewhat puzzled by the idea of someone responding to the accusation of being a bigot by saying, "I think that’s pretty offensive, don’t you?" Um, isn't calling someone a bigot SUPPOSED to be offensive?

You know, I'm married to someone of the opposite sex, but we don't have any kids and don't plan to do so. So does that mean our marriage is just as invalid as a homosexual one by NOM standards? I can live with that. Also, wouldn't it be logical for these people to support polygamy? After all, if one mom and one dad is better than two parents of the same gender, wouldn't multiple moms and dads be even better? And even if you do think a kid is better off being raised by people of both genders, why do they have to be a married couple? [livejournal.com profile] bethje was raised primarily by her mom and her uncle. What would NOM think of that?

And, while this has nothing to do with the rest of this post, I still thought it was kind of fun.

Name That Element

Yeah, I couldn't remember the symbol for antimony. In fact, I'm not even sure I can recall what antimony is. Sounds kind of like a Shakespearean character. {g}

NOM should be NOT

I'm glad you weighed in on this tripe, you raised some points I didn't hear elsewhere. I'm beginning to think marriage itself should be outlawed. Period!

*ok, i exaggerate a wee bit*

Actually, that's very close to my opinion-- not that marriage should be OUTLAWED, but that it not be a legal designation-- that the most the law/government should be involved with it is to recognize WHENEVER two or more adults decide to set up housekeeping together, whether as a romantic couple, long-term roommates, relatives cohabitating, whatever, so the only business the government has with it just has to do with, you know, taxes, and litigation if problems in the household partnership come up, and health care benefits... you know. Then leave the concept of MARRIAGE, since it IS (or at least CAN be) a sacramental union, to individual churches and religious groups and, well, individuals with their own spirituality. Keeps the separation of church and state going, and allows groups who narrowly define marriage to KEEP their narrow definitions without coming down on people who aren't in their group!

In fact, I'm not even sure I can recall what antimony is. Sounds kind of like a Shakespearean character. Or maybe something somehow related to the rest of your post!

I'm mounting a new campaign to outlaw the institution of marriage. I'm calling it OM. When my plan comes to pass, all these idiots will actually have something of a valid point (their marriages will mean nothing), plus Rush Limbaugh (he's not married, is he?) can cackle as they lead President Obama and Michelle to JAIL.

Finally, single people, and people who have not been allowed to marry will be the held up as exemplars of our new society, and "illegitimate" children will join with all other wee bairns, restored to privileged status. Thank you for your donation to OM. A chicken in every pot.

I don't know if Rush is married now, but he's had at least three wives in the past.

So what does NOT stand for? Nasty, Obnoxious Twits?

Did you know that they recently changed their name to Two Million for Marriage, which they abbreviate as 2M4M? Someone didn't do their homework into personal ads... *g*
