The Answer Key
Mar. 9th, 2007 10:40 amHas anyone reading this ever seen a film called Why Man Creates? I saw it twice back in school (once in sixth grade, and I think the other time was in seventh), and I can't remember all of it. I believe the first segment was called "The Edifice," and represented the history of the world in a building. Another one had a high-bouncing ping-pong ball, which I think was a metaphor for an idea, or something like that. But the segment I remember the best, and one that comes to my mind quite often, was a really short one consisting entirely of a conversation between two animals (snails, I think). It went something like this:
Snail 1: Have you ever thought that radical ideas that threaten institutions later become institutions, which in turns reject radical ideas that threaten institutions?
Snail 2: No.
Snail 1: Oh. For a minute, I thought I had something there.
The reason why I thought of it was
bec_87rb's reply to this post, where she mentions how Protestantism changed from a radical new form of Christianity to the religion favored by regressive conservatives.
lozenger8 recently asked me some interview questions, so I might as well go ahead and answer them.
1. Even though you're not a bachelor, do you wish Bachelor Chow existed?
I guess I technically AM a bachelor, since I'm not married, and I have a bachelor's degree, to boot. {g} Anyway, to answer the question, it would be cool if it existed, but I probably wouldn't eat it. When I want to eat something easy to prepare with little nutritional value, that's when I heat up some Hot Pockets. {g}
2. Have you been doing any of your Oz writing? If not, why not?
Not recently. As of late, I've been so Sims-addicted that most of my free time has been going into that. I still come up with a lot of ideas, but I'm not sure when I'll get around to actually writing them down.
3. Would you say that American Dad has surpassed Family Guy in being consistently funny?
Overall, I think I still find FG to be the funnier of the two, but there have been weeks when a new AD episode far surpassed a FG episode (and sometimes a Simpsons episode as well).
4. Do you think American Idol has run its course?
I think they've run out of ideas to keep it fresh, which is why they have to resort to dumbass stunts like have exit doubledoors that only open on one side, so Simon can say, "Other door, love" about 80,000 times per episode. I won't pretend that I'm not still somewhat entertained by it, though. It's a guilty pleasure, I guess. Blame
bethje. {g} I have no clue how much longer it will last, but since it's cheap and gets good ratings, I'm sure it'll be around long after everyone who isn't in a contestant's immediate family has lost interest. But since the contestants tend to come from rural areas, their immediate families are generally large enough to keep the ratings high. :P
5. What's the best feature that The Sims 2 has that the original didn't?
I think mostly just that there are new interactions that make logical sense, but weren't included in the original. Like, now you can talk to the postman, raise cooking skill levels by actually cooking, cuddle in bed, and work out without a weight bench. The aspirations are also pretty cool, since they give you some goals to work toward, but it's annoying when you just keep cycling through the same ones over and over again.
And while we're on the subject of answers, how about the answers to the game from this post?
1. And I can do the ____, I can do the Robocop.
"The Frug," by Rilo Kiley.
obsessical got this one.
2. Said you found a way to end it peacefully.
"The Lines You Amend," by Sloan
3. Here I sit, feeling low, wishing I had anywhere to go.
"Rocket Ship," by They Might Be Giants. This was never actually released on an album, but the chorus was cannibalized (as the Johns might put it) in making "Spiraling Shape."
4. Cry to me from wooden benches, purses.
"A Viewing," by Visqueen. I know very few songs by this band, but I know that: 1) Kim Warnick of the Fastbacks used to be in it, 2) lead singer Rachel Flotard did backing vocals on Neko Case's most recent album, and 3) they did a song for the Young Fresh Fellows tribute album. These, of course, are all points in the band's favor.
5. Love is like a ______. The more you feed it, the more it grows.
The song is "Ramblin' Rose." The version I have is by the Fastbacks, but I think it might have originally been by a group called MC5. Nat King Cole has a song with the same title, but I think it has different lyrics. Regardless,
jenhime got the title correct.
6. Well, it seems about my whole life, I've been kind of depressed.
"Are You Headed My Way?", a seriously underrated song by Frank Black and the Catholics
7. Well, guy in a skeleton costume comes up to a guy in a Superman suit, runs him through with a broadsword.
"Oceanographer's Choice," by the Mountain Goats.
revme got the artist, but not the song. Since the title really has nothing to do the song, I can't say I blame him for not knowing it offhand.
8. When we met we still had innocence, and we did things because they made sense.
"Help Yourself," by the Posies
9. Sometimes I feel like I need a vacation.
"Bedrock Anthem," "Weird Al" Yankovic's parody of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Under The Bridge" and "Give It Away."
revme got this one.
10. It's raining so hard, and the cabs, they won't stop.
Another TMBG song, this time from the audio book version of Sarah Vowell's The Partly Cloudy Patriot. I believe it's called "Gallows Hill And Andersonville."
11. It takes photon power eight minutes of an hour to make it to our sun.
You know, I really thought someone would get this one. "Pie In The Sky," by Frank Black.
12. Cease to resist, giving my goodbye.
"Wave Of Mutilation," by the Pixies.
revme got this one.
13. What are you staring at, in that hospital bed?
"Montana," by John Linnell.
obsessical got it.
14. Pinwheel spark, break loose and roll.
"Falling Through Your Clothes," by the New Pornographers. I really don't know whether "spark" is a noun or a verb in this context, but I assumed the former when determining comma placement.
15. _____, o carefree days that fly, to thee we sing with our glasses raised on high.
"Bright College Days," by Tom Lehrer
16. Well, we know where we're going, but we don't know where we've been.
"Road To Nowhere," by Talking Heads.
travspence got it.
17. I've been praying all the week through, at home, at work, and on the bus.
"Earn Enough For Us," by XTC.
countblastula got it.
18. Somebody invented a gun that shoots flowers.
This is from TMBG's Santa Cruz Venue Song, which also includes the immortal lyric, "If you close your eyes, Darth Vader is naked."
19. My name is ____, and I excel. I can open the gates to Heaven or Hell.
"O Death," a traditional song covered by Camper Van Beethoven, who did the version that came up for me. I know also Ralph Stanley's version, from the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack.
20. I don't know, I don't know, where I'll go or what I'll do.
The song is "The One I Love Is Gone," and it was apparently originally by Bill Monroe, and covered at one point by Linda Ronstadt. The version that came up for me was actually by the Meat Purveyors.
21. It's your _____, your ______. So you want to tie the knot.
"Big Day," by XTC, as correctly answered by
countblastula
22. Standing in the dock at Southampton, trying to get to Holland or France.
"The Ballad Of John And Yoko," by a couple of guys from Liverpool (actually only two of them on this particular song, if the trivia I've read is correct).
rockinlibrarian got it right.
23. Blinking on and off, it's the _____, with a carapace shell and her black lace thighs.
"The Queen Of Eyes," originally by the Soft Boys, and later covered by the Fastbacks. It's the latter version that came up for me. Regardless,
countblastula got the right answer.
24. I finally won the game. My friends are such bloody idiots.
"Gulleball," one of Muckafurgason's 30 Second Songs
25. Let us be lovers, we'll marry our fortunes together.
As
rockinlibrarian knew, it's "America," by Simon and Garfunkel.
26. Everything is catching on fire.
The first of the infamous Fingertips. Since there are a lot of TMBG fans on my friends list and this is the least obscure TMBG lyric on here, I see no way that this one could have remained unidentified.
obsessical was the one who actually got it.
27. Here's the sad story about a deer and a man.
"Hunter's Kiss," by Rasputina
28. He shouted out his last word, and he stumbled through the yard.
"Fair," by Ben Folds Five
29. You might as well just give up trying, 'cause you can't stop it with all of your whining.
revme knew that this was "Rotation," by the Young Fresh Fellows.
30. On the Ferris wheel, looking out on Coney Island, under more stars than there are prostitutes in Thailand.
This is probably my favorite line on here, with #7 a close second.
countblastula correctly identifed the artist as the Magnetic Fields. He did not, however, get the title, which is "Strange Powers."
Okay, wasn't that fun? Let's do it again someday!

WOW! THIS IS ONLY THE SECOND TIME IN MY ENTIRE LIFE I HAVE EVER SEEN REFERENCE TO MC5! I still have never actually HEARD MC5, but I was watching a documentary last year where they kept being mentioned and I was like "How come I have NEVER HEARD of them before?" and was interested.
(actually only two of them on this particular song, if the trivia I've read is correct)
Correct as far as I know, and I like to think I know those things. ('Twas John and Paul, incidentally).

Date: 2007-03-11 01:59 pm (UTC)Oh, okay. I didn't know whether it had an official title; the MP3 I have bears the title I used in the post. Of course, as the McSweeney's songs prove, TMBG isn't always consistent with their titles, especially for non-album songs.
I'd like to hear more of Visqueen at some point. The songs I do have are pretty cool, but not enough so to make me want to run out and buy their album (or, more realistically, order their album on Amazon).
