Last night's Simpsons and Family Guy episodes were among the best in recent memory. In the former, I thought the idea of stories-within-stories was great, and I liked the way it all came together at the end. I also liked the meta-humor, and I thought the way Burns temporarily lost his fortune this time actually made more sense than how it happened in "The Old Man and the Lisa." Moe's story was apparently a flashback to the summer before the ever-changing present in which the show has been operating since the beginning, which was pretty clever. A few jokes fell a little flat. A character unexpectedly saying "bitch" isn't automatically funny ([livejournal.com profile] bethje had much the same complaint about Alexander Graham Bell doing the same thing in "The Girl Who Slept Too Little"), and as for Lenny's one line, there are few things more disturbing than adult babies. Overall, though, it was an excellent episode. Finally, was the short guy from the Excluders who started the scavenger hunt supposed to be a reference to something? He wasn't drawn like a typical Simpsons character.

As for Family Guy, I thought Quagmire's change in personality was funny. I also liked the Bill of Rights gag, and the Adam West bits.

Unfortunately, the rest of the Fox Sunday night lineup is made up of garbage. Does ANYONE actually enjoy The War at Home, or is it a case of the show getting ratings because people are too lazy to change the channel? And I didn't watch any of Free Ride, but it really looks horrible, not to mention that it appears to be remarkably similar to Fox's other crappy-looking mid-season replacement, The Loop.

I HATE "The War at Home." Is the father supposed to be an Archie Bunker type, "a lovable jerk?" Because he is simply a JERK. I remember one episode where his son was dating a girl who happened to be fat, and he tried to get him to stop dating her just because of that. In the meantime, he was attracted to his daughter's friend who had gotten breast implants. I'm sorry; is this supposed to be funny?!

I've never actually watched an entire episode, but from the few minutes I've seen and what I've heard about it from other people, I think you're right. Jerky characters on TV are usually tempered somewhat either by being good-hearted in spite of it all, or else it's made obvious that they're wrong. (Sometimes it's a combination of both.) I have no evidence that War does this. Personally, I think just listening to the guy talk for a few minutes is bad enough.

Count me as another person who dislike The War at Home. I usually tune out and do housework or read while it's on.

I think the uknown character on The Simpsons was from one of the cartoons on the Rocky & Bullwinkle Show. I could be wrong though. He definitely looked familiar.

Yeah, I also thought the guy looked like a Rocky & Bullwinkle drawing. I wonder if he was supposed to be anyone in particular.

He looked a lot like Commander McBragg, from Underdog:

FG was funny but also super creepy because of the whole breastfeeding-engorgement dealy. A leetle too close to home, thanks muchly.

"Free Ride" feels like a pisspoor consolation prize from Fox for yanking "Arrested Development".

I sometimes have to wonder if Fox pays off the Nielsen families. "If you watch Free Ride, The War at Home, and World's Greatest Footage of Train Wrecks Caused by Cows on the Track Caught on Tape, there's something in it for you! Be sure not to turn on Arrested Development, though."

The image of Peter jiggling Lois dry at Quagmire's wedding is still stuck in my head and it still makes me laugh.

Oh, and the montage of Disney movie parodys. I liked Peter and Cleveland looking like the clock and the candlestick from Beauty and the Beast.

I think that I have gone on record multiple times for my extreme distaste for "The War At Home".
