Lyrical Stance
Dec. 26th, 2004 10:01 pmI might as well go ahead and give the answers to that lyrics quiz I did a little over a week ago.
1. Ran into the henchman that severed Anne Boelyn.
From "Talula," by Tori Amos.
bethje got Big Bird on a fishing line, and the correct answer to this one.
2. Tried to buy your love, but I came up short.
The Moldy Peaches, "Downloading Porn With Dave." Nobody got this one.
3. If his contradictions should attract you, should he distract you, heaven help you then.
They Might Be Giants, "Dr. Evil."
tisok got the right answer, but if being wrong is right, then maybe he was actually wrong.
4. One thing on which you can depend is, he sure knew who a boy's best friend is.
Tom Lehrer, "Oedipus Rex."
revme managed to get it without developing a complex.
5. And I bought the right one just for you.
This one was from "You'll Miss Me," the second TMBG song in the mix.
revme got this one, too.
6. And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
From "Wish You Were Here," originally by Pink Floyd, although I was listening to Rasputina's cover.
revme did it again with this one.
7. Last night I dreamt I'd forgotten my name.
Nobody knew that this was from "I Wish I Was The Moon," by Neko Case. That's okay, because I wouldn't have either, if I hadn't been listening to the song at the time.
8. Want to be upside-down, maybe thrown from side to side.
Another one I probably wouldn't have known myself, this is from "The Fake Headlines," by the New Pornographers.
9. My spell of hours will make you fall.
"25 O'Clock," by the Dukes of Stratosphear. Actually, it was the Fuzzy Warbles demo version, but that's pretty much irrelevant.
tisok got it.
10. When the sun clocks in we'll still be talking and champaigning.
From "You And Me And The Moon," by the Magnetic Fields
11. I'm not that vain little boy that I was.
XTC, with "Miniature Sun." As with #9, this was actually a Fuzzy Warbles demo. I really don't have very many actual XTC tracks on my computer. Regardless,
revme got this one.
12. Ezekiel's wheel spins; I'm borne upon a throne by Red Cross crusaders who wave from Galilee.
Another one nobody got, this was from the title track of Camper Van Beethoven's new album, New Roman Times. I'm actually listening to that album right now, but not that particular song.
13. When I saw your fine physique, I was into you like a train.
Frank Black and the Catholics, with "I Love Your Brain."
tisok got it.
14. She thought it would be fun to try photography. She thought it would be fun to try pornography.
"Beautiful," by Belle and Sebastian
15. Bells are ringing, we are singing, joyous in our industry.
From the second Tori song that's quoted in this game, namely "The Happy Worker."
bethje answered this one correctly.
16. Shout from the rooftops and address the press.
From "Meaningless," another Magnetic Fields song
17. Some big friendly polar bear might want to take you home.
The song is "Waterfalls," and the version I was listening to was by Sloan, but it was apparently originally a Paul McCartney song. Who knew? Well, I guess
tisok did. It was
bethje who correctly identified the song, though.
18. There's this crazy thing in my head; I don't know if it's true.
As
revme knew, this is from "Do You Ever Think Of Me?" by Laura Cantrell.
19. Repetition's got you down, nothing but your engine sound.
tisok knew that this was from "Nightdrivers," by Muckafurgason.
20. We'll buzz this town, see what makes them tick.
From "Devil's Airship," by PiƱataland. Nobody got it. Oh, well. It's kind of obscure.
Happy day-after-Christmas to everybody, and happy birthday to
slfcllednowhere. I think it's coming up on the anniversary of the day I got my livejournal, too. I believe I was seeing TMBG in New York at this time last year.
