Sunday night was Nellie McKay at the World Cafe Live, and it was my first time seeing her as a headliner (the other time I saw her was as part of Aimee Mann's Christmas show), so that was pretty exciting. World Cafe Live shows are always a little weird because the audience tends to be a bit older than at other venues. It's bizarre that I can see the same band at two different venues and it will be an almost entirely different demographic in the audience. The opener was a local musician called Birdie Busch, and I can't say I thought much of her. Nellie's set wasn't exactly what I would have chosen. It was very heavily weighted toward her newest album, and I would have liked to have heard more old stuff (relatively speaking, that is; she hasn't been performing for all that long), especially the faster numbers. It was still a lot of fun, though. She did a Tom Waits impression at one point, and sang "Mother of Pearl" with Sarah Palin instead of Dennis Kucinich giving the message at the end. (Honestly, I never really got the Kucinich reference in the first place. Is he anti-feminist and I don't know about it?) After the show, she stuck around to sign autographs, and I now have a signed copy of the DualDisc version of Pretty Little Head. When I told her my name, she sang a bit of the Nathan Detroit song from Guys and Dolls, and I told her the only songs I knew with my first name in them were that and her own "It's a Pose," to which she said she hoped that song didn't describe me. Actually, thinking about it later, I realized this wasn't really true; there's also Allan Sherman's "Sarah Jackman" ("How's your Uncle Nathan?" "Him I got no faith in."). Anyway, I had a picture taken with her, and I don't think I look that good, but she's cute. So it kind of balances out, right?

She also told
bethje that she (Nellie) liked her (Beth's) hair. The rest of my pictures from the night are here.
We missed the Sunday night cartoon lineup because of the show. Beth did tape it (yeah, I think we're the only people who still use a VCR, but we still haven't sprung for a DVR), but we only got part of Family Guy. The part we saw was actually good, though, so I'll have to catch the episode when they rerun it. We did see the entire Simpsons episode, though, and that was pretty enjoyable. The ending was weird, but creative. They did do the same basic thing with the cat, though, didn't they? And there's the whole Principal Skinner/Armin Tamzarian issue, which we can't discuss under penalty of torture. I wonder whether or not they'll acknowledge the Fat Tony switch in later episodes.
