So, what did I do this weekend that's worth mentioning? Not much, really. I already wrote about seeing the Nightmare on Elm Street remake. On Saturday night, we went out to eat at Applebee's, and then watched The Bad Seed, which I'd never seen before. Pretty dark for a picture from the fifties, really. Tonight was the usual cartoon line-up, starting with a Simpsons episode that I liked pretty well. There wasn't a whole lot to it, but Ned Flanders monitoring the neighborhood worked well. The Family Guy episode, on the other hand, was only okay. I appreciate them trying to do something different and more minimalist than usual, and it had its moments, but the bit about Stewie making Brian eat his poop lasted way too long. And I really can't figure out what the deal with the length was. What was that, an episode and a quarter? Couldn't they have either cut it down to normal length or expanded it to fill two full time-slots, rather than just throwing in a bunch of filler after the plot had ended? Not that I don't appreciate seeing some outtakes, but isn't that what the DVD releases are for?

I always loved The Bad Seed. Pretty much plausible, except for the wobbly genetics at its core. The plausible part, to me, was the mother, who is slow to realize her daughter is a monster, and who loves her anyway.

Well, even in the movie itself, they said someone inheriting serial killer tendencies is incredibly rare. I guess sociopathy can be passed on genetically, but does the film want us to believe it skips a generation?

One of the many reasons I wouldn't want kids is that I'm terrified to have a child who's really nasty. I really don't know how I'd react.

I wanted kids, but I comfort myself by thinking I didn't have to cope with a possibly "nasty" kid, and i didn't have to feel bad for being an appalling parent.

I think most nasty kids are so because of insecurity issues, so, yeah, when one feels insecure as an adult, sometimes this transfers insecurity to the kid. My mother was a good example (of being insecure and transferring it to her kid), and I consider her a good mother. But probably having kids would activate the protective genes you obviously have, and you would do anything to try to make your kid feel secure. All parents are imperfect, but most do well enough to turn out potentially great kids.

I fear that I wouldn't be a good parent, but that's okay, since I don't want kids anyway.

If you think The Bad Seed is ahead of its time and way out there for a fifties' movie, then clearly you haven't seen Reefer Madness from the thirties. Yes, they actually used the word "reefer" back then.

I didn't really like the Family Guy episode, except maybe the part where they were drunk. I don't mind them focusing on just Stewie and Brina, but some of that was just too gross for my sense of humor, heh. I did enjoy the extra stuff, though. It's always fun to hear Shipoopi again. :)

That's kind of how I felt. I'm just not much on poop jokes, and the FG writers seem to feel it necessary to stick some into every episode, despite the fact that they're capable of much more.

It's always fun to hear Shipoopi again.

I've heard songs from musicals tend to be expensive, so maybe they're trying to get their money's worth by showing it so many times.
