This morning, there was some story on AOL about Saddam Hussein's motivations, based on the recent interrogation of the former dictator. According to the article, he wanted to create a legacy, catch up with Iran in the weapons department, and go against the United States whenever he could. It did not, however, made him sound like he was an immediate threat to the country. He WANTED to create weapons of mass destruction, since Iran had them, but the indication seems to be that he didn't actually have any.

Anyway, after dropping [livejournal.com profile] bethje off at school today, I went to Pizza Hut for the lunch buffet. I got there at 1:15, and the buffet closed at 1:30, so they weren't as quick about refilling it as they generally are earlier in the day. At one point, they had very little other than thin crust pizza, which, while it isn't bad, seems kind of pointless. It just strikes me as somehow wrong to go to Pizza Hut and not get pan pizza. I did have a good lunch, though, and I even ate a salad, which doesn't sound so crazy in and of itself, but perhaps it would sound more so if you realized that I'm not a big fan of salads.

Yesterday, I took this quiz, which I got from sarah's blog.

Which Subculture Are You?
brought to you by Quizilla

Really, I didn't have a particularly accurate answer for most of the questions. The first one listed a bunch of bands, but I hadn't heard more than two or three songs by most of them, if that. I mean, I have an idea of what the Cure and the Sex Pistols sound like, but even in those cases I don't think I've heard very many of their actual songs. I guess I'm just not up on my subcultures. {g}

Another pointless exercise I did was to go back into my journal archives and look at the music I've listed in the "current music" field. Probably most of my entries were made when I wasn't actually listening to music, for whatever reason. When I AM listening to music, I sometimes kind of cheat and put on something I don't listen to all that often, so as not to give off the (largely accurate) impression of being someone who only listens to two or three bands. Anyway, here's what I came up with:

15 They Might Be Giants and related artists (10 TMBG, 2 Mono Puff, 1 Hello the Band, 1 song from the People Are Wrong soundtrack, 1 feed of Now Hear This)
12 Camper Van Beethoven and related bands (4 CVB, 6 Cracker, 2 Monks of Doom)
10 Young Fresh Fellows and related artists (3 YFF, 6 Minus Five, 1 Fastbacks)
9 XTC and related artists (2 XTC, 6 Andy Partridge, 1 Edward Rogers covering XTC)
7 Magnetic Fields and related bands (5 MF, 1 Future Bible Heroes, 1 6ths)
5 each from Tori Amos and Belle and Sebastian
4 Sugarplastic
3 Frank Black (one with the Catholics, two without)
2 each from the Apples in Stereo, Laura Cantrell, Neko Case, the Monkees, Sloan, and Thrush Hermit
2 video game themes (Waltz De Chocobo and the Super Metroid theme)
2 songs from compilations (Jim & Jennie and the Pinetops from The Bottle Let Me Down, and the Whites from the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack)
1 each from the dB's, the Decemberists, Destroyer, Ani DiFranco, Ben Folds Five, Kelly Hogan, Hypnotic Clambake, Tom Lehrer, April March, Carolyn Mark, the Moldy Peaches, Moxy Früvous, Muckafurgason, the Replacements, the Sadies, the Statler Brothers, and Talking Heads

I probably missed a few, but that's definitely most of them. What does this show? Nothing, really. Just that I like making pointless lists. {g}

i HATE when the pizza hut lunch buffet closes. >:\ they should really keep it open longer. i think everytime i've gone they had just closed it or were just about to. the desert pizzas are pretty interesting.

Yeah, the remaining selection was pretty slim. Even when they DID put out more pan pizza, it was all just plain cheese and sausage.

I've never tried any of the dessert pizzas. What's on them? I HAVE had ham and pineapple pizza, though. My dad and his wife like it.

And yeah, they should definitely keep the buffet open longer. I'm not sure why it's only open for two hours (at least at the one I went to).

I prefer the thin crust to the pan pizza. Unfortunately, Mr. Cunningham does not. He doesn't care about my pizza needs.

(Ok, he does. Most of the time we go there, he lets me get a thin crust pizza.)

The thin crust just doesn't taste as good. Besides, can't you get thin crust ANYWHERE?

W/r/t the Cure and the Sex Pistols, you're not really missing much. I _hate_ the Cure, and... the Sex Pistols had some good songs, but, I dunno. I suppose they're worth listening to, but they're more Name Recognition than anything else. (Although I tend to wanna kinda smack the folks who are all "WHOOOO SEX PISTOLS INVENTED PUNK!!!! WHOOO THEY ARE PUNK BAND NUMBER ONE!!!" because they aren't, and they aren't that good, and even a lot of their songs were about how they were basically a manufactured band to sell stuff. I think people took it ironically or somethin'...)

Also, the Statler Brothers RULE.

(Also, I know what you mean about the band selection. I am not terribly into any of the bands listed. I came off as "indie kid" too. But yeah, I was all "Well, uh... hm. I am guessing I'll have to hit the Obscure Bands, because I _do_ listen to obscure stuff, just... not with the stupid "YOU ARE STEALING MY TASTES" baggage, because I actually WANT to share this stuff. I am the type who will sit you down and make you listen to a record you hate, rather than be all "Oh, wait, you like [foo] now? I hate them! As of last week!" Cause, like, I WANT folks to like [foo], so I can talk about them. Well, and have some response, since normally I just talk about them anyway and get sorta glazed-over reactions from folks.)

I think there's a certain satisfaction in liking something obscure, be it band, book, TV show, movie, or whatever. But I think part of that satisfaction is in introducing it to other people.

I do think find it kind of irritating when annoying people are into the same thing I'm into, and there's less of a chance of that when it's something obscure. I mean, I'm not going to be totally elitist and say, "I don't want the WRONG SORT getting into MY bands [or whatever]," but I kind of feel that way sometimes.

Hm, yeah -- I've noticed that, too. That sorta "Man, you don't UNDERSTAND this like I do! I've been there since the BEGINNING man!! Or at least when my friend gave me a mix-tape which was like a couple years before you even though they'd already put out like 6 records anyway, but man, I GET THIS!!!" thiing. Which can sort of be based a little in reality, because, like, the folks who are only at a show to hear, like, the Hit Single get pretty annoying, I have to admit. Or the folks who are there to basically just get drunk. (There was an Onion article a while ago that seemed to be making fun of folks who get really pissed off at the people who are "there at a show to have a good time", i.e. getting drunk, loud and obnoxious rather than enjoying the show, and.. .it was weird, because my reaction was "Yeah, but those people are RIGHT! Drunky McAsshole DOES SUCK!")

I'm not sure I understand why the drunken, obnoxious types who don't pay much attention to the actual band bother going to shows. I mean, I guess I could see it if it were, say, a show at a small bar with a $5 cover charge (although even then you're probably going to be annoying people who really want to hear the band), but when the show costs $20 or more, doesn't it seem like you're just wasting your money? Especially since the drinks aren't included in that price, so you'd really be better off just going and drinking somewhere without a band being involved.

That's kinda what I think, too, but, well, I kinda think drinking in general is Stupid And Overly Expensive, and money could be better spent elsewhere. But, well, I think for some of these folks, perhaps being annoying _is_ the allure of it all. So, I guess it's worth it to spend like, 50-100 dollars on Being A Worthless Jerk.

Not if you want to ruin the time of people who paid to enjoy themselves seeing a band!

That's okay. {g} Besides, it isn't like I could say I liked him before he was popular, since he stopped performing some time before I was born.
