I'm sure you know by now that I have an interest in monsters. It isn't even so much that I like to be scared as that I just like weird-looking creatures. And I know I'm not the only one, due to the fact that the Krampus seems to be gaining popularity in the online world. So what's a Krampus? Most of you probably already know, but he's basically the Anti-Santa. In Alpine lands, when St. Nicholas makes his rounds distributing presents to the good kids, the bad ones are beaten with a switch by this demonic dude. In fact, it's said that he takes REALLY bad ones to Hell in a handbasket, and I mean that literally. Krampusfest is celebrated on the night of 5 December, right before St. Nicholas' Day, and it involves people dressing up like the holiday devil. Images of the Krampus vary, but he pretty much always has horns and what might be considered a typical demonic face.

Looks like that last one is finally dragging the Teletubbies to Hell. Good for him! Actually, now that I think about it, the Teletubbies might already be IN Hell. I mean, where else would you find a demanding loudspeaker, an ornery vacuum cleaner, and a sun with a baby's face on it?

They really need to do a holiday special where the Krampus teams up with some other holiday monsters.

I don't have too much to say about the cartoons tonight. The Simpsons episode was pretty low-key, but it had its moments, and I think it did a decent job of explaining Bart's reasons for wanting a brother. The Cleveland Show and Family Guy had a few funny moments, including the Jeremy Irons and House bits in the latter, but were rather weak overall. I obviously don't expect these shows to be totally realistic, but the way Peter took over the company was pretty unconvincing even for a Family Guy plot. American Dad, on the other hand, was a fantasy episode, but it still worked. I did wonder how they were going to end it, but I think they did a pretty good job with that, without having to resort to it all being Stan's dream. Klaus WILL still be alive in the next episode, though, right?

And then there's this:

O tidings of comfort and vovat,
Comfort and vovat.

God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen

Hell yeah, I dig the Krampus! I think all holidays should have monsters.

Family Guy? Unrealistic? ;-P They completely won me over though, when they started running from the swamp monster Scooby-Doo-style.

Well, obviously Halloween has a lot of monsters, and there's one associated with the Chinese New Year. Maybe there needs to be an Easter Weasel, who eats the eggs before kids can find them.

They completely won me over though, when they started running from the swamp monster Scooby-Doo-style.

Yeah, that was one of my favorite parts of the episode.

There is an Easter special, Here Comes Peter Cottontail, that has an evil bunny that kind of freaked me out as a little kid. It has a metal tail, and I remember it being rather menacing. lol

Ahh, Krampus. I had a friend before who kept insisting that I should know who/what Krampus is...and then they were talking about some Austrian Krampus day on Colbert and I actually knew what he was talking about.

Reading about Krampus scaring little kids with rusty chains and sticks makes me wonder though...do any parents in America actually give their kids coal for Christmas if they behaved badly enough? It always seemed like kind of an empty threat--something that you always heard about as happening to bad kids, yet it never happened to you or anybody you knew regardless of how bad they were that year.

I tend to think that, at least in modern society, parents would only give their kids coal as a joke. As much as they might want the children to think that Santa will punish them if they're bad, I doubt too many people ever make good on that threat.

I did not know about the Krampus, and my life is so much better now that I do! Everything is better with monsters. Especially Christmas. I couldn't agree more that the Teletubbies are living in hell, by the way -- that's a very special circle of hell they occupy, specially engineered to induce madness...

I was disturbed that it turned out that Rollo's name was spelled "Rallo". Really, what the hell, "Rallo"?

Yeah, that's how they spell it in the TV Guide descriptions, too. I'm not sure whether it's supposed to be a joke on weird spellings for names or what.
