Tonight was the Erin McKeown concert at the World Cafe in Philadelphia, which [livejournal.com profile] bethje and I attended. The opener was Jill Sobule, and I have to say I didn't know much about her other than that [livejournal.com profile] colleenanne was a runner-up in a contest to redesign her website, and that Katy Perry stole her song title. Actually, she addressed that latter, saying that she got sick of people asking her about that, and eventually sarcastically referred to Katy as...well, I forget the exact phrase, but it was something like "that title-stealing cunt." They quoted Jill as if she were serious, and she got a lot of e-mails from angry teenage girls, some of whom eventually ended up as her Facebook friends. Anyway, she was pretty good, and she and Erin performed a few songs together. Erin's set included some of her older songs, like "Queen of Quiet" and "Blackbirds," as well as many from her newest album, which we still don't have. Towards the end, Erin and Jill played a medley of "All the Single Ladies" and Destiny's Child's "Survivor," and a cover of "Coming to America" complete with Neil Diamond imitations. Definitely a fun show, and Erin informed us about the Christian side hug. I forgot to bring my camera, so the only pictures I took were a few really lousy ones I took with my phone. They're so bad that I'm not going to bother linking to them directly, but I guess the links will show up in my next Twitter transcription.

I almost went to the show when they played Ballard. I don't remember why I didn't go. I think it was a weeknight, and/or it was when I was crazy sick. Either way, I fucking LOVE Jill Sobule, and I dig Eric McKeown quite a bit too. That would have been an awesome show. I should have gone.

I really like Jill Sobule, have for years. And that stupid girl stole not only the title but the whole phrase of that song. Not that that song is one of her best. Anyway. She's hilarious and smart, 2 of my favorite things for people to be.

And I just learned about the Christian Side Hug myself, when one of my LJ friends put up a video of his dog being forced to do it!! That's a whole 'nother weird (the CSH, not the dog).

Don't tell the Christian side hug people how much kissing goes on in the Bible. I'm not sure they'd be able to handle it.

Kissing? Heck, what about all that "knowing" they did in OT? And the begetting, well!

(I pretty sure the CSH is a send-up)

From what I've heard, the instructional video was intended as a joke, but some fundamentalists Christians actually DO perform side-hugs. The weird thing is that I always thought putting my arm around someone's shoulders was a step beyond giving a hug.
