I still fail to understand why there's supposed to be a connection between loving Oz and being gay. If I was gay, wouldn't my crushes have been on Ojo and Button Bright instead of Dorothy and Ozma?

A few years ago, the Baum Bugle ran an article on the appeal of Oz for gay men. I can't remember all of their conclusions, but I know one of them is that Oz is presented as a land that welcomes outcasts. This is also part of its appeal to me, though, and I'm not gay. That's as far as the books go, though. With the movie, I think the fact that it stars a gay icon might have something to do with it. And she sings about RAINBOWS, no less.

Truth is, I never was able to figure out how Judy became a gay icon, either!

But yes, the thing about Oz welcoming outcasts makes sense. That was a big part of the appeal to me, too: to go to a place where the odd are normal, and where all are welcome no matter what they look like on the outside. Like many kids, I felt like I was in someone else's world growing up.
