We almost got hit by a tornado here last night. There was a warning, so the two of us, and the cats, spent an hour in the basement waiting out the warning. Funnel clouds touched down about 50km NE, and 150km NW of here. It looked like the storm clouds were gathering for armageddon, but perhaps they were only gathering for Ozma's birthday?
Sounds like Polychrome touched down for the birthday party with just a wee bit too much enthusiasm.
A tornado touched down in Chesterton, Indiana, the night before last -- there's an Oz Museum and book store there that I've visited a few times (although, sadly, the museum closed down last year.) There's some irony for you.
I have to admit, I don't know who Polychrome is. I didn't read all the Oz books when I was a kid, just The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and possibly one of the others, but haven't revisited the Oz universe since. At the risk of getting beaten with a stick, I'll further admit that I don't read all of vovat's Oz posts *duck*
I have seen the 1939 film a few times -- once as an adult. Actually, funny story about watching that film as an adult -- my husband had never seen the film, so we rented it. He and I had made an incredibly spicy Thai green curry, which we coincidentally started eating during the scene where Dorothy and friends finally encounter The Great And Powerful Oz. His fiery appearance was nicely echoed by the fire in our mouths!
Polychrome is a sky fairy, and a Daughter of the Rainbow. She first appears in Road, but makes appearances in several other books.
And hey, I really don't expect people who aren't familiar with the Oz books (or aren't at least INTERESTED in being familiar with the Oz books, anyway) to read all of my Oz posts, so that's okay.
That's okay -- I read all of his posts, but I usually only comment on the Oz ones.
I'm not a fan of spices, but you picked the right scene for it! The movie, however, is absolutely nothing like the original book, and completely unrelated to anything that happens in the later books. Polychrome is, quite literally, the daughter of the Rainbow. As such she's always sunny and just a bit flighty! Vovat can, of course, explain much more beyond that.
