The most recent Simpsons episode was pretty lame, honestly. Doing four stories meant they didn't leave much time to develop any particular one. The Queen Elizabeth one seemed like it had some potential, but it was practically over right after starting. The Snow White one had some good jokes, especially with the working animals, but still struck me as lacking. I didn't care much for the Macbeth segment at all, but Maggie's Fountainhead was kind of cute.

Family Guy actually did a better job with the multiple out-of-continuity stories thing, which they do a lot less often. I remember the genie/superpowers/Little Rascals one, and the one about Griffins throughout history, but I think those might have been the only two. All three of those were pretty amusing, even though I've never actually seen The Shawshank Redemption. (I haven't read any Stephen King either, but despite the reference to books at the beginning, the segments were obviously parodies of the film adaptations.) American Dad was pretty good as well, and I appreciate that they maintained the character development, with Stan no longer being totally homophobic.

While on the subject of cartoons, here's a survey-meme-thing that I got from [livejournal.com profile] secondlina:

Disney's Dark Age
[o] The Aristocats (1970) - This was one of the movies they used to show when I worked at a toy store. I still need to see the whole thing.

I'm a bit of a Stephen King fan, and think Family Guy could/should have done a lot better. It just didn't work for me. And they should have done The Shining!

[o] The Secret of NIMH (1982) - Oh...My ....GOD! O_O

I'm curious what your reaction means! You can't believe someone else remembers it? Or you're horrified anyone remembers it? ha ha I loved both the book and the movie as a kid.

Um...it actually means I forgot to edit out some of [livejournal.com profile] secondlina's comments when I cut and pasted, so you'd have to ask her what it means. {g} I've never seen the whole thing, but I know some people who did found it pretty disturbing.

Clearly you need to go rent Lilo and Stitch, Monsters Inc, and The Incredibles because your life is not yet complete. I love Peter Pan too, but that may just be because I generally have a Peter Pan fetish :-P

Monsters Inc. was already on the queue, and I just added Lilo (which [livejournal.com profile] bethje has seen) and The Incredibles. Beth actually has Peter Pan and a lot of the other Disney animated movies on VHS. I'm thinking that, after she's done with her CPA exam, it might be a good idea to watch them all in order.

[x] Fantasia (1940) - I remember finding the part with the dinosaurs kind of boring, despite being a kid who loved dinosaurs.
Me too! We're not weird! Also, it's to "Rite of Spring" which is a piece I could just never get into.

[x] The Black Cauldron (1985) - As you may know from my earlier posts, I just read the book, and it was a lot better than I remember the movie being.
I swear, am I the only person in the world who liked this movie? Then again, the last time I saw it I was a kid with no taste.

[o] Cars (2006) - Nobody seems to like this one very much, and from the little of it I saw, I agree with them.
Apparently we don't know the same people-- my parents LOVED it and gave it to Sam for his birthday, and he and Jason also now both LOVE it. I keep walking in when the movie is half over already, so I have no idea what it's like if you actually see it straight through.

[ ] Howl's Moving Castle (2004) - I just got the book, and might well see the movie after I've read it.
This is totally the most-recently-read of my Favorite Books of All Time-- I totally don't know if I want to see the movie though, because people who loved the book first seem to go "eh" about it, even though people who haven't read the book tend to love it.

I really don't remember much about the Black Cauldron movie. I'll have to watch it again and see what I think of it this time.

I think you would like the Little Nemo in Slumberland movie. There's a scene with the Dance of the Bumblebees (or whatever that classical song is called) and there's a character Nemo meets who's the queen of Slumberland that reminds me A LOT of Ozma.

Well, Baum DID want Windsor McCay to illustrate the Oz books.

He would have done an AMAZING job too, if he did.
