Jellia Jamb first appears by name in The Land of Oz, in which she serves as an interpreter for the Scarecrow and Jack Pumpkinhead, who actually both speak the same language. Obviously, she's somewhat mischievous, and plays somewhat of a jester role in mocking the King of the Emerald City. Here's how Jellia is described in that scene:

She seemed very sweet and modest, having a pretty face and beautiful green eyes and hair. A dainty green silk skirt reached to her knees, showing silk stockings embroidered with pea-pods, and green satin slippers with bunches of lettuce for decorations instead of bows or buckles. Upon her silken waist clover leaves were embroidered, and she wore a jaunty little jacket trimmed with sparkling emeralds of a uniform size.

Since this was back when the green glasses I mentioned yesterday were still in use, Jellia's eyes and hair might not actually be green. In fact, she's usually drawn as a brunette, and she claims to originally be from the Gillikin Country. Later in the book, Mombi magically switches places with Jellia in order to trick Glinda. But it's actually generally agreed that her first appearance is in Wizard, as the unnamed "green girl" who waits on Dorothy. In fact, Ruth Plumly Thompson confirms this in Ozoplaning, which gives Jellia her biggest role in the series. For the most part, she's a perpetual background character, serving as Ozma's personal maid and the head of the palace staff. When she does appear in a major role in Ozoplaning, she still has some of her sprightly personality from Land, but she also seems more mature.

Jellia's role in non-canonical books is usually not that large, but a few of them do offer some interesting details. According to Mysterious Chronicles, her father's name is Jimb Jamb, and they're the closest neighbors that Mombi and Tip have. Jimb is also the only other person in the area to have a four-horned cow. And while this isn't strictly relevant, I created Jellia's cousin Jara as a character in my Sims 2 game, and the two daughters she had were Adora and Traffika. Dave Hardenbrook's recent book Jellia Jamb, Maid of Oz (which I reviewed here) gives Jellia a starring role, but also the habit of taking nude candy baths in the palace gardens, which seems rather far-fetched to me.

I roll my eyes at the Mary-Sue-ness of Jellia Jamb taking nude candy baths.

I was all for it, at first -- but then, I have a dirty mind. But on second thought, it seems like she'd start attracting bees and ants.

Yeah, I could maybe see chocolate syrup or whipped cream, but wouldn't liquid candy be awfully hot and sticky?

I suppose it would all have varying degrees of stickiness, but the liquid candy would have to be scalding!

I imagine Jellia has a sister named Strawberry. *g*

Just so long as I don't have to meet her nephew Space!

... or her younger brother Toad (say it aloud), but I've always had a soft spot for her older sister, Jinjur. (Well, perhaps I shouldn't hint too much about my work in progress).

Much as I wouldn't mind spying on a nude bathing Jellia Jamb (well, I guess that would depend on which nude was bathing her, *hyuck- hyuck*) the idea of a hot candy bath is .... kinda gross. (sticky, ants, etc.)

If Jinjur and Jellia are sisters, wouldn't they have recognized each other at some point?

Who says they didn't?

ch-Tongue-eek. sorta. It's a story I'm working on and, no, it is *not* based on evidence or theory in the books (although both Jinjur and Jellia have a similar wicked sense of humor). It's just an amusing speculation on my part.

But... as a fellow fan to fellow fan... is it impossible, in your opinion? (Other than there being absolutely no evidence or reason, that is.) So far as I know, in the Baum books (I'm discarding all the non-Baum completely) Jellia and Jinjur had no contact other than in Land and in Land what contact there is minimal. Is there anything I'm over-looking that implies they aren't sisters?

FWI some of the other relationships in my "work in progress" are a *lot* more unprecedented!

No, I can't think of any reason why they couldn't be sisters.

Thanks. No reason they can't be but utterly no reason why they should be. That works for me. My "work in progress" isn't actually an "Oz book" per se so much as a "Mist of Avalon" about Oz.

In other words its "revisionist", I guess. I guess what I'm really saying is even though they'll be sisters in my book, I don't actually believe or expect any-one to be convinced that they "actually" are. Does that make sense?

(Reminds me of a scene in "The Wire" where two kids are talking about "Rudulph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "The lord of the Rings" and one of the kids said "Real elves aren't like that". I'm saying "I know Jellia Jamb and Jinjur aren't really sisters, but I'm pretending they are". Dang, we Oz fans are strange, aren't we?)

Jellia Jamb's translation prank is definitely the character's highlight in the Baum books.

Is there any indication of her age in the books? I always thought she was a little girl, but that Hardenbrook guy clearly has a different opinion.

She's described as "a young girl" in Land. I think it's possible that she matures somewhat throughout the books, in order to cope with her new responsibilities under Ozma, but I don't see her as an adult.

The drawings by Jno R. Neil in Land make her look like she is three or four years old. Denslow's drawing always struck me as sensible "working age"-ish (past childhood, old enough to be working as a governess, secretary, or if in were late 20-century au-pair). Later Neil drawings in maids outfit with apron and cap maid me think house-maid age, 14-18.

I don't think of her as "adult" but I can see her as on par with Ozma's age (but not older) which is old enough for a teen-age boy to fantasize about nude candy baths.

(I, personally, always viewed Dorothy, Betsy, and Trot as "children" i.e. too young for voyeuristic candy baths ... ew, yuck! yuck! I think Ozma with her responsibilities and knowledge was always old-enough-to-be-taken-as-adult which in reality doesn't exist but is what a child thinks late teenage-hood must be. [think Nancy Drew, Tintin, etc.] I guess the thought of a *child* working, as poor Jellia Jamb had to do, made me see her as a similar age.)

I could see Jellia being about the same age as Ozma.

I could see Jellia being about the same age as Ozma.

So that brings up the real question: Can you see Ozma taking a nude hot candy bath?

And if you can, could you invite me over some time 'cause all I can see over here is my driveway?

(A joke! A joke! I swear. I'm not really a pervert! I just play one on the Internet!)
