Larger than life and twice as natural
Jul. 27th, 2004 11:45 amYesterday, I got my first flat tire. I hit a street grate, and the tire was horribly and visibly deflated. Fortunately,
bethje's uncle Harry put the spare on for me, and I was able to drive to a place to get a replacement tire. I hope that never happens again. Now I'm kind of scared that everything will puncture my tires.
Speaking of Harry, he got a new puppy! He (the puppy) is a red dachshund. He's cute, but kind of aloof.
In the afternoon, Beth, her Uncle John, and I went out to King of Prussia Mall. We did some shopping, and ate at Bennigan's. I bought a little discounted book on world mythology at B. Dalton. I want some more of the Nintendo shirts from Hot Topic, but I didn't buy any. Those shirts are probably the best way to lure in new customers that Hot Topic has ever come up with.
Was having Radiohead playing on the stereo at the Sanrio store supposed to be ironic or humorously incongruous? It was probably just that someone working there liked them, but it made for somewhat of an amusing contrast.
Anyway, after shopping and eating, we saw Spider-Man 2 on IMAX. I'd seen IMAX films before, but just science-museum-type stuff about beavers and penguins and such. It was cool to see a big Hollywood blockbuster using that technology. Not that I think most of the crap that comes out of Hollywood would work on IMAX, but Spider-Man 2 worked quite well.
Last night, I had some weird dreams. I can't remember most of them, but I do know there was one where the country radio station played a cover of They Might Be Giants' "Kiss Me, Son Of God." In my waking life, I think a country arrangement of that song would probably work, but most of the mainstream country singers they play on the radio would probably be too conservative to cover a song with such a potentially controversial title.

Date: 2004-07-27 05:08 pm (UTC)I can't even remember what they normally play there. I think maybe they don't play music at all? Otherwise I never noticied any. I think this time the Radiohead music was playing on a pink Hello Kitty boombox, not a store stereo system, so I guess someone must have brought it in.

Date: 2004-07-28 03:09 pm (UTC)I wonder how lenient they are about what music they're allowed to play at the Sanrio store. When I worked at Family Toy, pretty much everyone who worked in the actual store hated the insipid children's music they played there, but higher management insisted on it. (I remember wondering if they would have let me No! after it came out, but that turned out not to happen until after the store had closed down.)

Date: 2004-07-27 07:36 pm (UTC)2> Every time we go to King of Prussia, we always end up eating at either Bennigan's or the Cheesecake Factory. I really like it down there.
3> We have so many t-shirts from Hot Topic. They really do have the best t-shirts around, don't they?
4> I last saw Fantasia 2000 at the IMAX down there. I think it's a great idea to make IMAX versions of new releases so you can really appreciate the sight & sound of the format.
5> The more I think about it, the more I'm sure "Kiss Me, Son of God" would work really well as a Country song. Perhaps The Dixie Chicks could give it a try. They already seem to have upset most right-wing County fans anyway.

3. They seem to have an odd mixture of cool shirts and ones with off-color sentiments or the names of lame nu-metal and neo-punk type bands on them. Kind of like Spencer's in a way, I guess.

<3>Point well taken. They actually do have more than their share of trash, but when they have a good shirt, I tend to really like it.
[Oh, and in a completely unrelated question: did you get the new version of "Renew My Subscription" from iTunes? I was happy to pay $.99 for "Love Is Eternity" from TMBG's site, but I don't know if it's really worth installing iTunes on my computer to get a new version of a song I like. Just curious.]

Date: 2004-07-28 03:55 pm (UTC)I haven't bought either of those songs. I'll probably end up buying "Love Is Eternity," but I'm kind of hoping they'll come out with a package deal for the non-album songs, so they'll cost less than 99 cents each. Not sure about the iTunes thing. I can't use iTunes on my computer, but if I could, I'd probably buy stuff that was exclusive to there. I doubt it would hurt to install the program, but, not having heard the iTunes version of the song, I can't tell you whether it's that much different from the one that was up at tmbg.com.
