Why are the ocean levels rising up?

There was a lot of flooding in the area where I worked yesterday, and a few roads were closed. I heard on the radio that some houses and businesses in the area were flooded. With our current level of technology, doesn't it seem like we should be able to do more to prevent natural disasters like floods and tornadoes? Maybe it would interfere with the delicate balance of nature or something. I don't really know that much about that kind of stuff. It just seems like we (the human race, that is) have changed so much of nature to fit our own needs, yet we've made no effort to stop the parts of nature that don't seem to have any beneficial effects.

Speaking of not having any beneficial effects, I heard that the attempted Constitutional gay marriage ban was defeated in the Senate. Certain Republicans want to keep trying to get one, though. I'm sure I've said this before, but the whole anti-gay-marriage thing baffles me. Most of the wacky right-wing proposals at least benefit somebody (in most cases the right-wing wackos themselves), but how is banning gay marriage going to help ANYBODY? I just don't get it. It just strikes me as pure unmotivated meanness. Someone can feel free to explain it to me if they want, but I doubt very many homophobes read this journal.

I wish you could get a bigger house in Animal Crossing.

heh - it's actually all the technology that's *causing* the flooding!

Thanks to all our emissions, climate change is in full swing, and part of that is the melting polar ice caps.

Each person needs to change their own lifestyle to reduce energy consumption..

EXACTLY. That's the thing. Most other, pretty much _any other_ Big Time Issue like that, even if I feel strongly one way or the other, I can at least _see_ where someone'd go with the other side. But not the whole Gay Marriage thing. It's completely insane. I'm pretty sure it's about the only time where it's actually Correct to say that If You Do Not Agree With Me, You Are An Idiot. I keep wanting to hear a real reason. I doubt that This Mythical Real Reason would convert me or anything, but I just want something that's not "Well, my imaginary space dad says that it's wrong based on ancient texts that were done when they thought that men could only create a finite amount of semen and therefore masturbating/non-procreative sex was a sin, because what happens when it comes time to actually have Procreative Sex and you come up dry, huh?". (Or, and I've actually heard this argument once or twice from someone on a message board who actually _was_ guy -- that Marriage is something bourgeois and lame that straight people do, and therefore no one should be trying to make it legal because it's Gauche. As far as I can tell, he wasn't being Ironic, just Stupid.)

I don't know. I still like Jon Stewart's thing about the whole situation... "Wait, so, wait, they're gonna make ME marry a gay person?"
