In this post, I'll briefly discuss two movies and two dreams. The first movie is Needful Things, which [livejournal.com profile] bethje and I watched last night. I've never read the book (or ANY Stephen King book, for that matter), but I enjoyed the movie, and thought it had an interesting concept. Nice variation on the theme of mysteriously appearing shops, too. The other movie, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, was better received by the general public, but not by us. {g} I liked the idea pretty well, though, and I have to give Jim Carrey props for playing the main character convincingly. I never once expected him to start yodeling out of his butt or flailing his arms and yelling. I think the main thing I learned from the film, though, is that guys who own memory-erasure businesses shouldn't hire kids who get drunk and high while on the job.

As for the dreams, the first one I remember involved my really wanting to buy a Dungeons & Dragons manual, despite not having an opportunity to play the actual game. (The sad thing is that I might actually do something like that. I remember when I stayed in a beach house with my dad, and THEY had a D&D manual, which I read quite a bit while there.) I rode the bus to a store that I think was both Target and Toys "R" Us at different times. I overheard someone talking about a woman bringing a horse on the bus, and the horse pooping while on board, but I never actually SAW said horse. I think the woman was in the seat in front of me, though. Later, my family was on board, taking my sister to the airport so she could fly to Ohio. And in the store were two cats, one tortoise shell and one black Maine Coon (looking a lot like the late Anderson, but with a different mouth).

The second dream started out with me in some house where a British guy was hitting on his maid, who was quite similar to Mary Poppins. His wife eventually came back home, and let their several dogs outside. There was also a cat, who walked outside but then came right back in again. Later, I was swimming in a pool that was partially in the same house, on both sides of the front wall and windows. Beth was on the other side of a window from me, and I did some trick where I created a massive wave that both of us rode into the air and then back down.

Funny, I don't see anyone who added me on Facebook with the initials H.J. Is this Howard Johnson? Ham Jelly? Harajuku? Homer Jay?

No more Jim Carrey movies just before going to sleep!

Actually, those dreams were both from the night BEFORE I watched Eternal Sunshine. I had some pretty crazy ones last night as well, though.

Tom (my husband) had a *bunch* of D&D books as a kid and never anyone to play the game with, which I always thought was sort of adorable and sad at the same time. Now that we are grown we have have played with some like minded friends, and his books are collectible, so I guess it wasn't that crazy of him.

My husband's the opposite-- he was a huge gamer back in the day (and a very talented game master at a variety of RPGs, not just D&D; it's worth mentioning that we first became friends after I was invited to play in a D&D campaign he was running, that's how important it has been in his life!) but now we neither have friends who live anywhere near us nor even time to play with them online anymore. So now he just pathetically reads all his gaming manuals over and over, plotting out adventures and characters and whatnot on paper, even getting into long phone conversations with his old gaming buddies about THEORETICAL games they COULD play but everyone knows deep down will NEVER HAPPEN. He really needs to find a new hobby, says me, as this is a BIT pathetic anymore!

I've been through dry spells like that, with no gaming. I say, if you can't get in touch with the same old people, find new people to game with. Even if they're not gamers to start with. Most cities have at least one game store, and there's always conventions. Great way to get your fix in one weekend.

I read the book Needful Things when I was like, 12 or 13 or so. It MIGHT have been my first "grown-up" book that I finished, but I don't know. I am thinking "grown-up book" is being defined as "doorstop" as it's really really thick. I actually liked it quite a bit, though I'm not sure how it would hold up. I saw the movie when it came out, and thought it was OK, but the book was a lot better.

I LOVED Eternal Sunshine, though. And it's remarkable that Jim Carrey actually CAN be a good actor when, um, the director seems to pistolwhip him into not being Jim Carrey. I don't know, I assume that the making of the film was actually laid back and fun and such, as there's a couple of shorts Gondry made around that time that are much more goofy and fun but it just really seems that whenever Carrey's on screen, it's almost like Gondry has a gun on his dog, basically being "You do FIre Marshall Bill and the dog dies."

From what I've heard, EVERY Stephen King book is better than any of the movies derived from them. I still haven't read any of the books, though.

I dunno -- I should probably read _The Shining_, because the Kubrick movie of that was awesome.
