vovat: (Simpsons Al)

I actually thought last night's Simpsons episode was pretty good, at least compared to other recent ones. The emotional core wasn't much, but both plots had some amusing jokes, and everyone was in character (although, as [livejournal.com profile] bethje pointed out, when does Gil succeed at anything?). The tribute to the words that had been removed from the dictionary being my favorite was probably the best part. I did find Homer's breakup business to be rather irrelevant to the main plot, but it was funny.

Family Guy, on the other hand, wasn't that great, and never really went much of anywhere. There were some amusing moments in Peter going back to elementary school, but that plot idea is such a cliché by this point (I think I saw it on TaleSpin, Goof Troop, and the Beetlejuice cartoon, not to mention Billy Madison) that they really should have done something more original with it. Besides, I think we've seen flashbacks to Peter in high school. Then again, we've also seen flashbacks to Peter playing with Simon and Garfunkel, hiding from the Nazis with Anne Frank, and being a member of the Jets from West Side Story, so I don't think we can put too much stock in those. {g} I will say that I laughed quite a bit at the Yosemite Sam bit, though.

As for American Dad, it was...disturbing. I'm mostly talking about the Haley plot, of course, but the cock-fighting subplot was pretty messed up as well.

So, in other news, happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] annamatic! Speaking of which, it's my birthday tomorrow. I'll be 31, and I don't really want to be. I mean, thirty is such a nice round number, so do I have to age anymore? And it's not like I'll really be doing anything on my birthday anyway, since Beth and I are both working, and then she has to study.

Oh, hon, if I do, you do!

Besides, it's preferable to the alternative, at least I hope it is!

Any way, Happy Birthday, and... odd numbers have their charms, too!

If the alternative is not living at all, then I suppose it is. {g} But if it were living without aging, I could do with that.

Thanks. 31 is a prime number, though. It doesn't even have any factors other than one and itself! What's with that?

Hey, I don't know of anyone in the RL who has lived without aging. I agree, if that were a choice, I'd give it a try.

31 is a cool number, all on its own! Have fun

Happy birthday!

And, I was surprised that (I did miss the Simpsons, though) I thought American Dad was the best of the night. American Dad is actually coming into its own as a show that's not just a meh Family Guy As Real Sitcom ripoff. Wiggy! I liked last week's a lot, too, the one that was just a Steve show with him getting revenge. And then there was the one like, five second scene with the rest of the family.

Thanks!

And yeah, I think AD has definitely gotten to the point where it works on its own, and the newer episodes are often better than the FG ones aired on the same nights.

I'm kinda wondering if I'm just sick of FG, or if it's actually not as good lately, or if Seth McFarlane's getting spread too thin (considering he's working on the Cleveland show, too...) or what. But yeah, I often go "Huh." with a lot of this season of Family Guy, which is a really weird feeling, since it used to be the highlight of Sunday nights.

I do get the impression that Seth is now putting his A game into AD, just as Matt Groening was putting his into Futurama back when that was current.

That could be, though, still, Futurama was AWESOME, where American Dad, I think can best hope for "Pretty Good". Though it will be interesting next season in particular when the President has changed. It's sorta like "Huh, there kinda goes the thrust of the show?" Which might be why they've been doing so much more non-Stan plots.
