Well, to start his post, I'll point out that the feud between the Angry Video Game Nerd and the Nostalgia Critic is quite amusing. I'd actually seen one of the Critic's videos before, in which he reviewed that bold anti-drug effort by the first Bush administration, Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue. I've been watching some of his others, and I've enjoyed them so far.

Speaking of nostalgia, a recent post by [livejournal.com profile] annamatic about the theme from Alfred Hitchcock Presents (the actual title of which is "Funeral March of a Marionette") reminded me of a game for my old Texas Instruments computer called Shamus, which used that music on its title screen. Has anyone else played this game? It was developed by Atari, so I assume it was available for computers other than the TI. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about it, and this review says that it's basically a combination of Adventure and Berzerk. (I've never actually played Berzerk, at least as far as I can remember.) Basically, you had to gather the keys to unlock new passages, while avoiding running into the walls (they were apparently all electrically charged), and shooting enemies. If you stayed in a room too long, a villain called the Shadow would show up to kill you, walking right through the walls to get to you. I understand that this is quite similar to the behavior of Evil Otto in Berzerk, as well as Baron von Blubba in Bubble Bobble. It definitely kept you on your toes while playing; I grew to dread the two notes that always announced the Shadow. There were four levels, each color-coded (and the color was identified on the bottom of the screen, which was useful when playing the game on a black-and-white TV set), but I could only ever reach the second. I remember including some Shamus characters, as well as ones from Word Munchers, in a story I wrote in elementary school.

By the way, did you ever ask yourself, "What if Jack Chick were slightly more up to date?"? Well, it looks like you can get your answer here.

And here are some memes and quiz results.

The attempt of the "Truth for Youth" comic authors to appeal to youth is just... sad. In the Harry Potter comic (http://www.thetruthforyouth.com/special/hpcomic/pages/Cover.htm), the Hermione person ("Minnie") calls things "off the chain" and "slamming," while the Harry character ("Ari"--perhaps they were trying to sound cockney?) says "I'm like totally disobeying my parents."

Also, apparently J.K. Rowling got everything she wrote from Get Sirius the Scribe Mage's Revelations of the OverRealm Corridor and the mom possibly had Voldemort with antlers exorcised from her. This comic almost makes it seem like the authors actually have familiarity with the books, but I bet they just read some plot summaries or character lists. Otherwise, if they had actually read the books, I can't imagine they'd still be pushing the crap about Harry Potter turning children into demon worshipers. Then again, fundamentalists can hate to realize that they were wrong and change their stances on silly things. Okay, obviously all people can be like that, but those who publish ridiculous Christian comics seem to be more prone to it.

The "homosexuality" one has some classically awful quotes...
A sister after her brother has come out to her and their siblings: "But, no, Louisa, they are not 'born that way,' so homosexuality does not qualify as a civil rights discrimination issue!"
A paramedic treating another brother who had a rock hit him on the head: "Kid, God loves the homosexual, but he hates the sin of homosexuality! And 'born that way' is a bunch of hooey!. When I was a homosexual 30 years ago, nobody ever said that -- nobody -- not once, never, they hadn't even thought of it yet..."

Man, I feel so sorry for any gay kid who is forced to read this and takes it to heart! Hopefully these things don't reach too many people.

Well, since they're in color, they're probably more expensive than Chick Tracts, and hence won't be spread around quite as much.

I think the fact that the vast majority of books that get banned/challenged are extremely popular/get media coverage is another pretty good indicator that these people never actually read the books, just heard about them! I always had to laugh at the HP banning-fanatics when I thought "well obviously these people have never read [long list of books with much more controversial material in them]!" One book I was always amazed that they never picked up on was The Amber Spyglass. NOW, THIS PAST YEAR, Golden Compass (which is wayyyy less potentially problematic than Spyglass) FINALLY made the list of top ten banned books, and I KNOW the only reason is that the movie finally came out, drawing attention to the series!

That's totally off the chain, dude!

Since there's an asterisk after "off the chain," I thought for a second they were going to explain what it meant, but instead the footnote just has a reference to a seemingly irrelevant Bible verse.

I do get the impression that they just got the information from some kind of summary (it's not like they're hard to find). Still, I guess they're a step ahead of Chick, who seems to think there a Ouija boards in the series.

One thing that I notice is how these comics, that are apparently supposed to convert people, make their religion look so unappealing. "Jesus doesn't want you to read fiction, play RPGs, trick-or-treat, listen to rock music, or have most kinds of sex. But hey, you get to grovel a lot!"
