I've now listened to the new Ben Folds album, Way to Normal, and I have to say I like it. It's more of a rock album than Songs for Silverman, with more fast songs. I particularly like "You Don't Know Me" (I've never really gotten into Regina Spektor, but her part in this song is good), "Bitch Went Nuts" (which has an old-school Five-era Ben vibe to it), and "Effington" (which explains the pun in the album title).

[livejournal.com profile] bethje went to a They Might Be Giants concert on Saturday, and bought the album by the opening band, Les Chauds Lapins. It's a group that performs French folk songs, led by TMBG's John Henry era TMBG backing band member Kurt Hoffman. I didn't go to the concert, but I DID listen to the album, and I thought it was pretty cool. The arrangements are heavy on ukelele and violin. Of course, I don't know any French, so I have no idea what the songs are actually about. English speakers tend to think that any singing in French sounds romantic. I wonder what the French think about singing in English.

Oh, and happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] obsessical!

Have you heard the Fake Leak versions? I _love_ the fake "Bitch Went Nuts". That one is hilarious. And the fake Dr. Yang is pretty dang good, too.

No, I didn't even know about the Fake Leak! Are they the actual songs, or something else?

It's about 6 or 7 songs -- there are a couple of real ones -- I think it's the Regina Spektor one, the single, and then a different version of "Cologne", and then the rest are some of the songs with the same titles as ones on the real record, but "worse". Except that they're all pretty rad. Like "Brainwascht" is "Brainwashed" from the point of view of a 13 year old kid, give or take, "Bitch Went Nuts" is about a neo-con asshole at a party where his girlfriend does a line of blow and flips out going all political (including lines like "Now when I close my eyes, I'll be fucking Jimmy Carter"), Dr Yang is basically about getting the doctor to call the narrator's girlfriend to get them back together, Way To Normal (which isn't on the real record) is sort of a goofy "Oh no, things are bad in the world and we should fix them!" type of song, and, um... hm... I think there's one or two others that I'm spacing on now.

Those would probably be pretty cool to hear.

They're pretty rad -- I just found 'em on the Pirate Bay and downloaded 'em up pretty quick. Which was nice, because they're, y'know, official leaks and all, heh. There were a few official BOX.net type of links going around, but I think those all crapped out. But bittorrent is the wave of the future!

Gary went to see TMBG Friday, and he said that the opening act was "interesting". "Interesting" could mean a lot of things in his lexicon.
