I've watched part of the Republican Convention, and it's good to see that they're sticking to their main values, to wit:

1. We don't like taxes.
2. Taxes are too high.
3. We need to get some tax cuts up in here.
4. Abortion is bad. So are taxes.
5. McCain was a POW. There must be some way to link that to taxes, right?
6. God is awesome, and doesn't want you to pay taxes. Even though Jesus said you should render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, and He specifically set up some taxes in the Old Testament.
7. We need to kill terrorists, and somehow do that without paying taxes.
8. You know what sucks? Taxes.
9. The government is really lousy.

I kind of have to wonder why, if the government sucks so much, they all are so eager to be part of it. If they're trying to take it down from within, why didn't they do it when they controlled both the executive and legislative branches?

I'm not totally sure what the point of these conventions is, when the candidates have already been chosen. But then, maybe that's just my anti-party (as in "celebratory gathering," not "political party," although I have some problems with the latter as well) bias talking.

I do think it's kind of weird that people are complaining that Sarah Palin is anti-choice, pro-Creationism, and anti-polar-bear. I mean, I don't like those things either, but did anyone actually think McCain would choose someone who DIDN'T hold the typical beliefs of the Religious Right? And why do people keep saying she doesn't have experience? She won second prize in a beauty contest (and collected $10, presumably)! Has Biden done THAT?

So, to turn to non-political issues, here's a survey that I got from [livejournal.com profile] rockinlibrarian:

And the Republicans are still doing that "If I believe it and say it, that makes it true" thing that just drives me bananas.

And how is anyone who has voted along with his party over 90% of the time considered a maverick?

Maybe he's only a 10% maverick.

...to be fair, there was hope that McCain would work on bringing the party to a more Goldwaterian base, which I would have been fine with, as, though I'm glad he didn't get elected president, I do respect the man. It'd help to make Republicans actually HUMAN again, rather than fucking retarded reactionaries that want to hasten along the rapture. I think it's so frustrating that with the Neo-Con/Christian Right movement that we can't really have proper debate on issues anymore -- it just devolves to:
"I disagree with you."
"BUT GOD SAID THAT WAS RIGHT AND IF YOU DISAGREE YOU DISAGREE WITH GOD AND YOU ARE THEREFORE GOING TO HELL!!!!"
"But we're talking about secular matters and there's the separation between church and state and besides I'm an atheist."
"ATHEIST!?!?!! OH MY GOD YOU'RE GOING TO HELL DON'T KILL ME OR PUT ME IN A CONCENTRATION CAMP OR TRY TO KILL MY BABIES BUT IF YOU DO THAT'S OK WITH ME ANYWAY BECAUSE I'LL GET TO GO TO HEAVEN AND WATCH YOU BURN IN HELL!!!"

Dang.

Yeah, that's a reasonable point. It seems like, since Bush won (the second time, anyway) partially by courting fundamentalists, the Republicans aren't going to let that tactic go, regardless of which candidate they nominate. Hey, Ted Haggard said that the evangelicals could sway any election. But then, he also said, "Gimme an escort and some meth." Anyway, it kind of seems to me that a lot of the fundamentalists are going to vote Republican anyway, and it would be easier to sway people on the fence with more moderate stances (y'know, like McCain appeared to have before he started campaigning this time around).

I'm sure that's because of the illegal immigrants.
