I'm just a miscellaneous kind of person
Aug. 10th, 2008 08:06 pmOkay, here's the post on miscellaneous things that I promised. And boy, are they ever miscellaneous!
1. I don't object to giving kids unusual names, but can't you at least choose something that SOUNDS like a name, rather than a seemingly random noun or collection of letters? And what is with the trend of names that rhyme with "-aiden"?
2. Pizza Hut appears to be going down the same road as Domino's, in terms of offering a whole bunch of stuff that isn't pizza. Now, I don't think diversifying is a bad thing, but didn't they get by for years selling very little other than pizza? And I don't think pizza consumption has gone down, so maybe people are just tired of going to a sit-down restaurant and waiting around for a while to eat something they could just as easily pick up and eat at home. I like Pizza Hut, but I haven't gone there in a while (largely because
bethje doesn't like it), and I think there are plenty of local places with better pizza. Still, Pizza Hut's pizza does have a unique flavor, and I wouldn't mind eating there again at some point, if they manage to remain in business.
3. I often use highlighters at my temp job, and they run out of ink really quickly. Maybe I need to start bringing my own. I've really never been big on highlighting things (I never did it in my textbooks, for instance), but I kind of need to at that job.
4. I think "tough love" really only works on tough people, and probably not even all of them. For a lot of us, harsh treatment is just going to make us more upset, not more likely to change.
5. Here's a survey with questions I actually thought were kind of interesting, courtesy of
slfcllednowhere:
Elaborate on your default icon.
It's Wart, from Super Mario Bros. 2. What more can I say? That he blows bubbles and doesn't like vegetables, yet for some reason has a vegetable-making machine in his room? For what it's worth, my thought on this is that this is the Dream Machine that the instruction booklet says he used to create some of his minions. It somehow got stuck on vegetables, and maybe he was waiting for the repairman when one of the members of the Mario team showed up. But it could just be some kind of cosmic video game law that every villain has to leave a loophole.
What's your current relationship status?
I've been married to
bethje since the end of February.
Ever have a near-death experience?
No.
Name an obvious quality you have.
I'm nervous.
What's the name of the song that's stuck in your head right now?
I don't really have one, but the first one that came to mind when I thought about it a little was Laura Cantrell's "Howard Hughes' Blues."
Any celeb you would marry?
I don't think so. I'm already married, and I don't know enough about most celebrities' personalities to judge whether they'd make good wives.
Who will cut and paste this first?
I doubt anyone will, but you're welcome to prove me wrong.
Has anyone ever said you look like a celebrity?
I've been told I look like Cillian Murphy, but I think my wife actually finds him more attractive than me.
Do you wear a watch? What kind?
I wear a pretty standard Timex digital watch, but I ended up replacing the original plastic band with a metal one, because my watch bands tend to wear out long before the actual watches do.
Do you have anything pierced?
Nope.
Do you have any tattoos?
No.
Do you like pain?
No, I have a low tolerance for it. And I think even masochists only like certain KINDS of pain.
Do you like to shop?
Sometimes, but only for certain things. I hate shoe shopping, for instance.
What was the last thing you paid for with cash?
Yesterday's lunch
What was the last thing you paid for with your credit card?
Bus tickets
What is your desktop background?
Bowser's Keep, from Super Mario RPG. At work, it's an Emerald City wallpaper from Hungry Tiger Press.
What is the background on your cell phone?
A picture of Beth
Do you like redheads?
I like a lot of different hair colors. But to make this answer seem like less of a cop-out, my stereotype on redheads is that they're feisty and hot-tempered. Which can be attractive, if properly directed.
Do you know any twins?
Yes, Beth's Aunt Marjorie and Uncle Harry are twins.
Do you have any weird relatives?
Sure, who doesn't?
What was the last movie you watched?
I'm pretty sure it was Hogfather.
What was the last book you read?
The last book I finished was Stephen Colbert's I Am America (and So Can You!). I'm currently working my way through Bill O'Reilly's Culture Warrior, and occasionally reading parts of Lewis Carroll's Sylvie and Bruno.
Is there such a thing as love at first sight, or is it more likely to be "lust at first sight"?
I don't think that love at first sight, in the sense we usually understand it, can happen. But I don't think an immediate attraction to someone has to be lustful, either. You can see someone and think that they're cute, or that they'd be easy to get along with, without wanting to have sex with them. It's a fault of the English language that the word "love" incorporates so many different things.
What's your favorite novel?
The Patchwork Girl of Oz, by L. Frank Baum
When was the last time you visited the street where you first lived?
I used to drive near it when going to and from the library job I had from 2002 through 2006, and I occasionally drove by my old house. Not that often, though. The last time was probably in 2003 or so.
Do you read your horoscope?
Not as a rule, but if I saw a paper lying around open to the horoscope page, I'd probably check it out.
Who's your favorite of the seven dwarves?
You know, it's been so long since I saw that movie that I really couldn't say.
What was your favorite subject at school?
History
What was your least favorite subject at school?
Gym
Do you like having your photograph taken?
I don't mind it, but I don't think I photograph all that well.
What time were you born?
1:29 PM
Ever seriously questioned your sanity?
Yeah, occasionally.
How many phone numbers do you have remembered and can say off the top of your head?
Mine, Beth's, my mom's, and a few of those 800 numbers that spell words. Also the Dial-A-Song number, but that's of no use anymore.
Can you Limbo?
I've never tried, but I doubt it.
Have you ever killed your own dinner?
No, I can't say I have, or that I'd ever want to.
What phobias do you have?
Heights and getting lost
What's your ideal breakfast?
A ham, cheese, and mushroom omelette. Also some orange juice, and maybe a bagel.
Where are you right now?
At work, but I won't be there when I actually post this.
If you could suddenly get the skill to play any single musical instrument, which would you choose?
I'd probably say the organ, because then I could also use my skills to play simpler keyboard instruments (including the accordion, which I'd like to be able to play). Also, I think Beth would like it.
Why do you blog?
There are some ideas I want to get down and share with the world. Also, I like attention.
Do you have any prejudices you're willing to acknowledge?
I tend to be prejudiced against drug users (including smokers), but I think I've gotten more tolerant about that kind of thing over time.
What's the longest time you've stayed out of the country/where?
The only time I've left the country was when I went to Montreal at the age of eight. We only spent a few days there.
Do you use ICQ, AOL Buddy list etc...?
ICQ? How old IS this survey? I assume my old ICQ account still exists, but I haven't used it in years, and didn't care for it even when I did. My AIM name is Fablesto, and I'm usually signed on when I'm using the computer, but I don't really chat that much. You're welcome to contact me, though.
If you were another person, would you be friends with you?
I'd probably drive myself nuts, but I'd also sympathize with myself.

Date: 2008-08-11 01:57 am (UTC)2. Pizza Hut should sell just pizza. Desert pizza, regular pizza, deep dish, that's fine. But not pasta or other non-pizza items. If it can't be served on a crust, forget it. Unless it's beer.
3. Skip highlighters and buy plain old crayola markers, using yellow and orange. Or if you get the pastel ones, you can use most of them. Although they have a tendency to make ink jet printer ink smudgy.
4. Tough love doesn't have to be harsh treatment. Tough love is giving someone what they need, instead of what they want. Like when my daughter bumps her head slightly, instead of making a big fuss over her, I tell her, "Get up, try again!" in an upbeat tone of voice. If I freaked out and made a big fuss over every boo-boo, she'd be a wimp. Now, if she smacks herself pretty hard, yeah, I'll kiss it and make it better. Other types of tough love: interventions, standing by and watching your child be bossy and NOT get their way because no one will listen to them, "intentional ignoring" like when I have a kid throwing a tantrum - the worst thing to do is to give them attention, so I pretend to ignore them.

Date: 2008-08-11 11:18 am (UTC)2. You know, I seem to remember the Pizza Hut near where I grew up in Pennsylvania serving beer, but the ones here in New Jersey don't. Oddly enough, though, a nearby Pizza Hut that closed down was converted into a Liquor Hut.
3. Would they show the ink underneath, though? And if so, what's so great about highlighters in the first place?
4. Yeah, that's true. I was thinking more of the kind of tough love where people try to humiliate their kids, or kick them out of the house when they have no means of supporting themselves. And I obviously don't know for sure, but I get the impression that the kinds you mention are usually more effective on younger kids who are still testing their limits.
