Space Is Gonna Do Me Good

The Bullshit! episode that I wrote about a few days ago got me to thinking about my own views on outer space. I've thought it was cool for as long as I can remember. I had several books about space, including a few on the solar system, and other ones about how space colonies are coming any day. I played spaceship-based games with my brother, and set most of the stories I wrote on alien worlds. I'm sure part of the appeal of space when it comes to fiction is that so much of it is unexplored. In the book Lost Continents, which I reviewed here, the authors mention how, as more new territory was explored, the habitats of mythical beings kept being moved farther and farther away. Now that the Earth has been pretty thoroughly explored, it's now other planets where it's still a remote possibility that we'll be able to find dragons and unicorns, not to mention Klingons, Wookiees, and wrinkly brown guys who eat Reese's Pieces. To the best of our knowledge, however, there are no Titans living on Titan.

Despite my interest in space, I differ from John Denver and Lance Bass in that I have no interest in actually going there. Maybe if someone were to actually invent warp drive (where's Zefram Cochrane when you need him?), I'd be interested, but I don't have the desire to sit around in a diaper for hours in order to merely orbit the Earth. And I have to suspect that a space colony would feel awfully claustrophobic, although I guess it would be possible to get used to it.

I guess that's all I have to say about that topic for the time being, but before I end this post, I'd like to wish a happy birthday to dragonxbait, therealtavie, and eagledna. I don't think the latter two actually read this journal, but hey.

Technology is weird. I get all these birthday wishes from people who only realize it is my birthday because some social networking functionality reminded them. I don't even really celebrate it :-P
