Last night's movie was The King of Kong, which is about a battle between two guys for the world record Donkey Kong score. I noticed somewhat of a bias in the documentary, with challenger Steve Wiebe being presented as a nice, modest (if obsessive-compulsive) family man. Champion Billy Mitchell, on the other hand, was portrayed as hyper-competitive in video games as well as business (he owned a restaurant and hot sauce company), and possibly in relationships as well, considering how busty his wife was. Anyway, it was quite enjoyable watching. Both competitors ended up scoring over a million points, which really does impress me. Personally, I'm more of a spectator in the video game world, except when it comes to RPG's, and I'm not even that great at those. I couldn't even imagine putting in the time and effort necessary to set a record on a classic arcade game.

And now, if I may ask a totally unrelated question, has anyone reading this actually ever used Windows Vista? XP works just fine for everything I need to do, but I'll probably end up getting a new computer sometime this year, and it looks like it's pretty much impossible now to get a new PC with anything other than Vista. I'm curious as to how well it works, and how it differs from XP. Having had to suffer through a few years of Millennium Edition, I'm somewhat wary of operating systems of which I have no prior knowledge.

Finally, happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] secretnthewings!

A couple folks at work bought laptops with Vista. They're regretting it and one just had the IT guys at work wipe it and re-install XP. When Steve bought his new PC, he didn't bother with Vista, and just got XP. Actually, in my experience, it's really pretty easy to find PCs with XP rather than vista, as it's been SO unpopular that they basically said "FINE." and yeah.

Basically, in my use of Vista, it's kinda like Mac OSX with all of the slick scraped off and with a SHITLOAD of bloat added in. And, well, due to Microsoft's wonderful "Release now, patch later" plan, it's CONSTANTLY asking for updates. So, I'm glad that... well, I'm a mac guy, heh. But also glad that when I use Windows, it's typically XP. Vista hasn't really impressed me much. It's better than ME, but only because not much could be worse.

I haven't done that much shopping yet, but I think Dell recently stopped offering new computers with XP.

Maybe they JUST did that, since Steve's new machine was a Dell, and he got it about 2 weeks ago...

They stopped offering them June 18th. Microsoft is not supporting XP for home users anymore after Monday, technically. Though apparently they are going to still provide security patches through 2010. My husband says that he expects windows 7 to be better, when in comes out in 2010, but sadly my computer did not make it that long.

Oh, boo. Stupid Microsoft. I guess that's one way to get people to buy their shitty products.

Yeah, I would totally switch to Mac or linux, but with mac, I still feel like you pay a lot more for the same hardware, and with linux, it's really challenging to get it to run any of the games I like to play. Although I am told the emulators for that are getting better, so maybe some day.

With Mac, now that they're running on Intel, I wonder if you could get a barebones PC and put OSX on it -- or if the archetecture is still much different. I know that my MacBook is one of the best windows machines I've run, though, heh. I think that while Macs are, at least on the face, more expensive, it's more that they don't have a real Low End line, like most PC manufacturers do (aside from the Mac Mini). I've even read that if you compare machines by power/capability, the Macs are comparable/cheaper (NB: If you do, get the bare-bones on RAM, and upgrade via an outside vendor like crucial.com; Apple reams you on RAM prices) to PCs -- it's just that the entry level starts higher/better. Which, on one hand is better as you get people more satisfied with your products that way, since they're forced into buying better... but on the other hand, gives you a reputation as being over-priced as people now are accustomed to entry-level-type-computers costing, say, 200-400 bucks, which Mac doesn't really offer (again, aside from the Mac Mini, which is a pretty good little machine, truthfully).

I guess I should have bought a computer before the 18th, then. Oh, well. There's no help for it now. My computer seems to be holding up all right, but it's started to show a few signs of deterioration. Besides, I could use more hard drive space.

You're welcome.

And hey, I'm 30, so 24 doesn't seem that old to me anymore.

My new laptop is going to ship with vista, but since we totally killed my old one, I can technically use the license from that computer to install XP on the new one if I decide I need to. Vista supports the 4 megs of ram that my new computer has and XP will not, so I am going to *try* to get used to vista, but we will see.

UGH! Vista is awful! Before this, I never even cared about the operating system. I just adapted as needed...but Vista is SO bad! Chief among my complaints is that it does not accept nor interact with scanner software. To use my BRAND NEW scanner, I always have to go through the extremely limited and clunky "Paint" program. Since I scan virtually every frickin thing that I draw, this is not just very annoying, but, frankly, it leaves me with art files that look unprofessional. Bad Vista! BAD!
