I still can't believe what happened to Gypsy. I've been going through pretty normal routines today, but I'm still depressed. It's just so hard to accept that it happened with no real warning.

On the way to work today, some dog ran out into the road. There was a moving truck in front of me, and I was afraid it was going to hit the dog, but it didn't. If you have a dog and live near a road, PLEASE take precautions to keep the dog out of the road.

I got a copy of the Minus Five's The Lonesome Death of Buck McCoy in the mail, but I haven't felt like listening to it yet. When I do, I'll probably offer some thoughts on it.

Here's something you can do, which I got from [livejournal.com profile] zaph:

1. Pick one thing from my interests list that you like, and explain why.
2. Pick one thing from my interests list that you don't like, and explain why.
3. Pick one thing from my interests list that surprises you, and explain why.
4. Pick one thing from my interests list that you don't understand, and I'll tell you about it.
5. Tell me one thing that's not on my interests list that should be.

1. I, too, like videogames. They are the best.
2. Dragon Warrior. It's nerdy and not Zelda.
3. Bwoop bwoop. You stole from me!?
4. Terry Pratchett. He's probably weird.
5. Zelda. It is hte best.

1. Yes.
2. There are other good video games besides Zelda. I know some people don't like non-action games, though, and that's cool. I think I mostly like them because they don't require good reflexes, which I don't have.
3. Yeah, I put that there so you wouldn't be the only one with it listed as an interest. I'll remove it if you'd like, though.
4. I guess I like his books because I'm into the fantasy and the satire, and that's largely what he does.
5. Maybe I will add that, since I like those games, but I'm not a fanatic like you are.

1 douglas adams: one of my favorite authors
2 american idol: it just seems like a bad idea to me, and not the kind of thing i'm entertained by
3 allan sherman: doesn't quite fit in with a lot of what i know about you, although i guess it's not that far off
4 new pornographers: what's wrong with the old ones?
5 candy butchers

3. He was sort of a precursor to Weird Al in some ways, so it makes sense in that way. To me, anyway.
4. The New Pornographers are a Canadian band that Neko Case is in.
5. I really don't know anything by them.

1. Laura Cantrell; her voice and delivery (especially on the first record) are incredibly good and perfect. She is wonderful. I have a bit of a crush on her, though probably not as big of one as I have on Sarah Vowell, but still. Anyway, Laura Cantrell's married, so... yeah.
2. Moxy Fruvous; I used to be really into them, but I got "You Will Go To The Moon" the day it came out. That album was so awful, two weeks later, I sold all my records of theirs, including Wood and B-Album which were (at the time) not out in the US. (I think they are now, though.)
3. I dunno, I guess "American Idol", just because it seems really horrible.
4. Ruth Plumly Thompson. (Assuming Bwoop bwoop is a in-joke type thing)
5. This one is hard, because I don't really know you, but Too Much Joy, since I figure from your tastes in music, you'd probably dig them, or at least could appreciate what they're doing.

1. Yeah, isn't she married to her producer or something?
2. YWGTTM was my first Früvous album, and I'll admit that I found it to be a bit lackluster, although there are some songs on it that I really enjoy. Bargainville was the album that really got me into the band, and it's still one of my all-time favorite albums. I like Wood a lot, too.
3. Beth got me into that show. Like pretty much everyone else, we were originally drawn in by the bad auditions, and then got more interested in the "good" performances. Some of the solo performances are pretty enjoyable. On the other hand, the group performances and in-show commericals ARE really horrible.
4. Miss Thompson was commissioned to continue the Oz series after L. Frank Baum died. "Bwoop bwoop" is a quote from one of the Game Boy Zelda games (Oracle of Ages or Seasons). The young Jabu-Jabu says it.
5. I've heard of them, but I really don't know anything about them. Isn't Weird Al a fan of theirs? I seem to remember hearing that he attended a Too Much Joy concert once.

1. Yeah -- I don't have my records in front of me, but I _think_ she's married to Jay Sherman-Godfrey (of the World Famous Blue Jays), but don't quote me on that. IIRC, her husband _has_ worked with TMBG in some way, though, so... yeah.

2. Bargainville was the first album of theirs I got (well, being a US person who got out of them because of YWGTTM, I guess that's sorta obvious, heh), and I really liked that. I got Wood/B through their fan club in Canada, and I really liked them at the time, although my best friend was all "Ew." at Wood, and less so at B (He liked some of it, like Johnny Saucep'n and I think Entropy, but the rest he thought was "too NPRy"), and kind of ended up stopping-liking-them-except-for-sometimes-Bargainville at that point. I was really into them until the day I got YWGTTM (IIRC, the day I got it, I was listening to Wood and really digging it, and then threw it off to put on the new record which I had been waiting for for ever, and... was less-than-impressed. A few listens later, I realized I really hated it. And then I sort of realized I had negative desire to listen to anything else they'd ever done. Now, about, what, 7 years after the fact, I sometimes wish I still had "Wood", though not enough to bother to buy a new copy. My Fruvous-Hating Friend has also offered me his copy of Bargainville whenever I want it. Even though it'd expend _no_ effort, I have yet to take him up on it.
5. Yeah -- On Cereal Killers, the liners tell a story about hanging out with Weird Al, who would go around and shout "Hey, it's Tim and Jay from Too Much Joy!" at people. Penn & Teller are also huge fans (they appear in the "Donna Everywhere" video, and there's various shots and such of Penn in a TMJ shirt) I'm not entirely sure you'd really dig them, since, well, TMJ is pretty much a Sloppier Young Fresh Fellows, and being exposed to the Fellows first, you'd probably Appreciate What They Were Doing, but want to listen to the YFF instead. (I came around the other way, so... yeah. I really dig the hell out of them.) For starter records, I'd recommend "Finally", "Live At Least" or "Son of Sam I Am". ("Live" is the only one of these in print; the others can be found real cheaply at half.com, though. Like, maybe 5 bucks each? I don't know, haven't checked recently. Their website, www.sayhername.com also has some live tracks they swap in and out every month if you want a free taste.)

Wow, I didn't think anyone else even KNEW about Moxy Fruvous! My favorites are the unusual songs- like "King of Spain" and "Green Eggs and Ham."

I think they're pretty well-known among They Might Be Giants fans, especially online.
