I have a few more things I want to post about, but I figured that it would be worth a separate post to say that [livejournal.com profile] bethje and I are now officially engaged. We'd been talking about it for a while now, and she knew about the ring, but I actually presented it to her today (or I guess actually yesterday at this point). I'm thinking March might be a good time for the marriage, but we haven't decided for sure.

Coming up, we have comments on Frosty, the Grinch, and The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus! Stay tuned!

Congratulations! Wedding planning is nerve-wracking, and people ask you about it constantly- we are *so* happy we are choosing a small, non-traditional ceremony. Did you know that in PA you can get a wedding license to marry yourselves, without an officiant (it is because of Quaker traditions). I think that is so cool, and I kind of wish we had a reason to get married there, so we could do it that way.

From: [identity profile] vovat.livejournal.com
I doubt we're going to have a wedding. We haven't decided anything for sure, but neither of us are party people. I believe you can get married by mayors in New Jersey, so we might end up going that route.

We're not have a party, though people did invite themselves to our ceremony (which you do have to have, even if it's at a courthouse with a justice of the peace). We're going to Hawaii (wedding and honeymoon in one, also my grandma lives there). You only get to do the wedding thing once, and it is a right of passage, so regardless of how many people you invite, or how you do it, I think there is probably some psychological value to making it special and memorable.

Well, it's always possible to have a ceremony after the actual marriage, right?

From: [identity profile] dragonxbait.livejournal.com
Yep, several of our friends have done this actually, when they found the needed to be married on short notice for some specific financial reason. You should just do what ever makes you happy, of course.

Aw, congratulations! And hooray! I think marriage is great. :) And I also advocate the non-wedding route; my husband and I just went to a judge in Chicago, and we've never regretted not doing the lavish ceremony thing.

Yeah, I tend to doubt I would either. People always say you'll regret not participating in social events that other people do, but it's not like I regret not going to the prom either.

And thanks!

That's pretty awesome.

Yeah, it's cool. Thanks. And I doubt all that many non-Baum-fans would be all that excited by Life and Adventures, since it's not one of the more popular Rankin-Bass specials.

I've got kind of a soft-spot for it because it's just so... weird and kind of unsettling. But then, I definitely am a Rankin-Bass fan. Even the ultra-depressing Jack Frost. And the kinda stupid one that's, like, I don't quite recall the title but it's like the Leprechauns' First Christmas or something.

I DO find it hard to sit through Rudolph's Shiny New Year, though. (That's the one that's a slow slog where he's trying to track down the baby new year with the ears, right? I kinda like the Rudolph's Christmas In July, I think it's called, where in the summer months he's moonlighting as a circus freak with Frosty.)

I like Life and Adventures, but I'll admit it's kind of weird, what with all the monsters and such. I believe I remember seeing Jack Frost as a kid (at school, actually), but it's been years, and I can't remember for sure that that's what it was. It looks like it'll be on ABC Family soon, though, so maybe I'll watch it.

I don't think I've seen Shiny New Year, but I do remember seeing at least part of the one where Rudolph and Frosty are in the circus. Didn't it have a puppet version of Annie Oakley in it?

I've heard the Rankin-Bass L&A doesn't actually have much to do with the book, but then, I haven't read it, since my Baum-readin' is very little. ('Zardoz, and I think one of the sequels?) I wish I still got ABC Family (or, hey, any TV right now!), since they play ALL the Rankin-Bass stuff, even the stuff I even forget about like Silent Night, the cartoon one with the rats in a clock or some shittin' thing that turns out to be pretty Jesusy rather than Santay.

Yep -- the Circus one does indeed have Annie Oakley in it. Or, rather, some semblance thereof. I don't remember her show name, but it's somethin' like Circus Annie, or Rootin' Tootin' Annie or something.

I've read the book several times, and I'd say the Rankin-Bass adaptation isn't THAT far off. There's stuff that isn't in the book, but most of it is at least BASED on something in the book. For instance, Tingler the Sound Imp isn't in the text, but Sound Imps are at least mentioned there. In fact, I believe all of the types of immortals and monsters that appear are mentioned in the book.

Isn't 'Twas the Night Before Christmas the one with mice in a clock? Or is there a separate special with rats instead of mice?

From: [identity profile] revme.livejournal.com
Oh, I think you're right... although I'm not sure if that one's particularly Jesusy. I remember there's one that's got mice AND jesus.

Date: 2007-12-13 05:22 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] vovat.livejournal.com
But did Jesus die for the sins of mice as well as those of men? That's the real question, isn't it?

Date: 2007-12-14 04:07 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] revme.livejournal.com
Nah, those mice were mistaken anyway. MOUSE Jesus died for THEIR sins, not mine.

Beth isn't into Star Wars, so I doubt we'll be doing that. She isn't into Oz either, or maybe we'd have an Oz-themed wedding.

Thanks, though!

Hoozzah!

If you want to completely avoid the ceremony route, you can check on Common Law Marriages in NJ. I know if Georgia, Common Law Marriages were as legally binding as any other ceremony (there is no Common Law Divorce). To get married in Georgia, you must (1) spend at least one night together as husband & wife, and (2) tell at least two people that you're married. If you do that, then Poof, you're married.

Thank you! And yeah, I don't really know the rules for common law marriages, but I doubt there will be any problem in getting a public official and a witness in order to do the whole thing officially.
