I had a dream where I was sort of hovering through the halls of a college dorm, but I could only do it with help from some girl. I'm sure someone could find all kinds of crazy symbolism in that.

My supervisor at work took us out to Maggiano's yesterday. I'd never been there before, but I liked it pretty well. We did family style dining, which seemed rather awkward and confusing to me. I don't even particularly like that kind of dining with my actual family, and I'd never do it by choice, even though it does generally mean larger portions. There was plenty of good food, though, including a mozzarella marinara appetizer, shrimp linguine, and strawberry cheesecake.

After work, I went to see Rasputina at the Trocadero, only to find that I'd missed a lot of the show. It was supposed to start at 9, and I got off work at 10, so I figured I wouldn't miss that much. As [livejournal.com profile] bethje told me, though, it actually started around 8:30. I did get to hear several songs, including a cover of "Bad Moon Rising" and a fair amount of stuff from Oh Perilous World, but it lasted less than an hour before the band left. There was no encore because Melora Creager was sick, which is probably why they hurried it along in the first place. I probably shouldn't take a chance on any more shows that I can't get to at the beginning. I guess it really depends on the show, though. If it had been a They Might Be Giants concert, the band probably wouldn't have even started playing an hour after the official starting time.

Speaking of concerts and music, I read an interview with Kim Deal where she says her reason for not wanting to do a new Pixies album is that she "doesn't want to hear new albums from bands she enjoyed years ago." The problem I see with this reasoning is that I'm not sure there ARE that many current Pixies fans who enjoyed them years ago. I get the impression that they're more popular now than they were the first time around. Besides, I tend to have more respect for a reunited band that actually records something new than one that's content being a nostalgia act. Oh, well. If nobody in the band wants to do a new album, it's probably better that they aren't making one. Besides, as I've mentioned before, I'm more of a Frank Black solo fan anyway.

I went to Maggiano's for the first time when I was in Chicago over the summer. We stopped in for lunch. We asked the waitress if the salads were the right size for one person for lunch. She said yes. So we each ordered one and they were each big enough for four people. I thought it was kind of wasteful. I've never been to Claim Jumper because I think portions that big border on the obscene.

I have no idea how big the individual portions are at Maggiano's. Of course, how big a portion I would be able to eat would depend on what the food is. Since I don't generally like salads, I think even a regular-sized one would seem big enough for four people to me. {g}
