  • Is not the concept of hunting down and killing terrorists contrary to the hallmark of the Western justice system, that everyone is innocent until proven guilty?

  • Why does the Republican party insist on condemning Hollywood? Are they not both dedicated to the same basic principle, i.e., making sure the filthy rich get even more money?

  • How can people insist that it's only illegal immigration they don't like, and then get all up in arms about amnesty? Wouldn't that make more illegal immigrants legal, hence removing a large part of the perceived problem? For that matter, how is it that there seems to be a fair amount of overlap between people who think America (meaning, of course, the United States) is the greatest country in the world and those who oppose immigration? Doesn't it seem like, if they liked the country that much, they'd want to share its greatness with others?

  • Why is the chosen word of criticism for new albums by established artists "mainstream," even when the music sounds absolutely nothing like anything played on Top 40 radio?

  • Since Fox seems to be so eager to introduce new channels, why don't they just create a separate one for professional sports (they already have one for college sports, according to Wikipedia), and stop pre-empting the Sunday night lineup?

  • Why do so few restaurants serve orange soda, or lemonade that isn't "light"?

  • Why does The Dictionary of Imaginary Places only include locations from the first seven Oz books, plus Queen Zixi of Ix? You'd think they would at least include all of L. Frank Baum's fourteen, although the first six would also make some sense, since Baum intended to end the series after that.

  • Is anyone else surprised that there isn't a musical version of Jurassic Park yet? Or is there one, and I just don't know about it?

  • Why do birds suddenly appear every time I cast the spell of Aves Arcesso?

  • Why do I always insist on providing the reason why I was thinking of whatever subject I'm covering in my journal? My recent post about fantasy is a good example. I guess part of it is because I think (probably incorrectly) that people are interested in knowing what I've been doing, and maybe will want to check out the source of my thoughts. But there have been other times I wanted to address a certain topic, but decided I'd wait until I had a specific reason for doing so, and I'm not really sure why I put those limitations on myself.

Fox does regional networks for professional sports, "Fox Sports Net". I think they feel that if they would be excluding those who either don't have cable or don't get the network from seeing the games, similar to the outrage that some people expressed with ABC moving Monday Night Football to ESPN. Monday Night Football is arguably not the big game anymore, as that "title" has been bestowed upon Sunday Night Football, which is now shown on NBC.

It bothers me that some shows are never cut in length because of overages in sports coverage. For example, 60 minutes is never cut because the games on CBS have run over (which you'd think they'd schedule for, since more often than not the games are longer than they're scheduled for) and that causes problems when you try to DVR a show that is on Sunday nights on CBS. I could expand more on that, but I just realized this is your journal, and I should probably make complaints on my own, so... carry on.

Well, there are a lot of other things that people can't see unless they have cable, so I'm not sure why sports are the big exception to that rule. (Well, okay, I know it's because they're big money-makers, but as someone who's a non-sports-watcher as a general rule, I can't totally understand why.) But it does seem like, regardless of what your view is on watching sporting events, they should come up with a neater system for deciding whether or not certain shows will be pre-empted.

Here we go again, probably shorter than last time:

--It is unless the guy you hunt down is actively trying to kill you when you find him. Which is probably likely, because he's bound to not be happy about it.

--Because filthy rich people feel better about their wealth if they have someone else to point at and say "You're worse than me!" Otherwise they're not the underdog, so nobody loves them.

--Seriously, I think because they misunderstand the definition of "illegal immigrant." What they're really up in arms about is People Who Don't Speak English.

--Because if, for example, Paul McCartney releases a new album, it always never fails to sound like it's being sung by Paul McCartney, who's been around since, OMG, 1962 or something. He's so mainstream now.

--Because the vast unwashed masses prefer the football game, when you get right down to it. They ought to make a separate channel for those snobs who just want to watch intellectual regularly-scheduled crap.

--You know what, I think there's some kind of mentality that either people are Health Nuts or Junk Food Freaks, with no middle ground for people who actually prefer lemonade to pop for reasons other than sugar content. Or, for example, when I went to chick-fil-a in missouri and I wanted the traditional breaded and fried chicken sandwich with lettuce and tomato and all the vegetables on it, but they only offered the vegetables on the grilled chicken sandwiches. Totally unfair.

--Because the universe of imaginary places is infinite, so you have to draw the line somewhere.

--Not surprised, but now that you mention it, I might like to see that. If I didn't have to pay for it.

--only you can answer that.

--I don't know about you, but I sometimes feel the need to explain my long train of thought to get to a topic just because otherwise I feel like the topic looks like it came out of nowhere and will throw people off, but that's probably more necessary in spoken conversation than on here, because none of us have any idea what else you'd been talking about just before, anyway.

There. Not erased.

Yeah, even though some people born in this country don't speak English either, and some of the most patriotic native-born Americans aren't so great at it either.

Because the vast unwashed masses prefer the football game, when you get right down to it. They ought to make a separate channel for those snobs who just want to watch intellectual regularly-scheduled crap.

Yeah, you're probably right. If sports get such great ratings, though, you have to wonder why they don't just make up a few new sports and show them year-'round. (Actually, if they made up a new sport, I'd probably watch it for a little while.)

You know what, I think there's some kind of mentality that either people are Health Nuts or Junk Food Freaks, with no middle ground for people who actually prefer lemonade to pop for reasons other than sugar content.

Which is presumably also why some people seem to think someone getting a supersized meal with a diet soda is hilarious, even though there are several quite valid reasons for doing so (not least of which is that some people just think the diet version tastes better).

Because the universe of imaginary places is infinite, so you have to draw the line somewhere.

True, but they DID set some limits, as detailed in the foreword. One of them is that they have to be places on our own planet, yet they include Narnia, which is identified in The Magician's Nephew as being in an alternate universe. As I said, I could see them not wanting to use all forty Oz books, but I think the first seven is a bit of an odd cut-off.

Hmm.

Are you practicing for your new Jerry Seinfeld-style comedic routine?

As long as that doesn't start a slippery slope that leads to my making a CGI movie about bees!

a slippery slope indeed!

I'm sure that movie could be quite good, but it rather freaks me out for some reason. Also, I got a Free Spoon from that movie in my cereal box the other day. I was just excited because I haven't got a Free Thing in a Cereal Box in many years.

Something about it rubs me the wrong way, but I can't really explain what. Well, aside from how I think CGI movies about things that don't actually talk but do in the movie have been WAY overdone as of late.

Also, while this wouldn't exactly affect the quality of the film, don't male bees (and ants, for that matter) not really do much of anything other than mating with the queen?
