What is Oz without Ozma?
Aug. 21st, 2007 06:21 pmToday is the birthday of Ozma, Queen of Oz. It's also apparently that of some little girl who was in Wawa at the same time I was, if what she told one of the employees was true. And it was the release date for the new Rilo Kiley and New Pornographers albums, as well as the day of my podiatrist's appointment.
I did get a chance to listen to the Rilo Kiley album, Under the Blacklight, once all the way through, and part of a second time. It's better than I feared it would be. The first song that I heard from it was "The Moneymaker," which was...I don't want to say "bad" so much as "insubstantial." It strikes me as very much a throwaway song, which makes me wonder why they'd release it as a single. Most of the album is much better, though, even if it's a little light in the lyrical department. I'm not so keen on "Dejalo," and my feelings on "15" are still somewhat up in the air (I do like the simile "deep as a graveyard," but I don't think that was original with RK), but I like the other tracks pretty well. I've only listened to the first few tracks on the New Pornographers' Challengers, but so far it sounds much less bombastic than their first three records.
As for the podiatrist's appointment, they numbed my toe and cut out the infected part. They said there's a chance it could get infected again, so I have to come back for a follow-up appointment in two weeks. Considering how everything else involving this toe problem has worked out, I have to say I'm fearing the worst. At least something has been done about the main issue, though.

I love how it insists that "writing for the web should be concise." Where was this decided? The big Internet General Standards Board meeting? Seriously, it's true that my entries tend to be wordy, and that's not altogether accidental. When I had a Blogger account, I didn't mind making posts that were only a sentence or two. With LiveJournal, though, it seems like every post is more of a separate entity, what with the titles and the fact that each one is isolated when you comment on it. So if I only have something brief to say on a subject, I'll usually either stretch it out or combine it with something else.
Okay, I'd better get back to bed. My sleeping schedule has been pretty crazy recently.
