I guess I'll start this post by mentioning that I finished John Swartzwelder's Double Wonderful a few days ago. I preferred his first book, The Time Machine Did It, but this other one had some good jokes. It's about a town in the Old West that works that become famous, and then endures a lot of weird hardships once it does. While a fun read, it does become somewhat apparent that Swartzwelder's background is as a television writer, not a novelist. There were plenty of parts where I laughed lightly, but thought I'd probably be laughing a lot harder if they were delivered in an audiovisual medium.

On Tuesday, I went out with [livejournal.com profile] bethje, Dorothea, and Patti to see Dirty Dancing, which they'd all seen before, but I hadn't. So I guess I've gained a few more points on the Eighties Cultural Awareness Scale (if such a thing exists). I think my parents actually saw the movie when it was new; in that respect, I mentally associate it with Cocoon and Back to the Future, which I also remember them talking about seeing. I know BttF was actually from two years earlier, so I guess the years of my first decade are kind of blending together.

Speaking of Back to the Future, I recently found this video, where some guy rants about how bad the NES game of that name was. That was actually one of the first games my siblings and I rented, and yeah, it was just as bad as the Angry Nintendo Nerd claims. There have been a LOT of lousy games based on movies, TV, and licensed characters, though. (Hey, remember Bart vs. the Space Mutants?) It's not just that they're bad, but that they often have practically nothing to do with their source material. That's not to say that they all sucked, though; DuckTales, for instance, was a really good game. Actually, I think the Disney/Capcom games were often done pretty well, although they did vary in quality.

As a final note, Amazon tells me that "customers who have expressed interest in music by Weird Al Yankovic have also ordered Minutes to Midnight by Linkin Park." Uh...good to know, I guess.

You didn't address Dirty Dancing in the way I had hoped. You were supposed to talk about characters and dialogue and stuff.

That Back to the Future review was freaking hilarious. I think I have a crush on that guy based only on that. Now I must watch all of his reviews. He did one for the Who Framed Roger Rabbit game. Did you see that?

I think it's my curse that, the less interested other people are in something, the more I can think of to say about it.

I actually found the Roger Rabbit review first, while looking for information on the phone number you mentioned. I linked to the BttF one because I thought it was funnier overall, and I figured anyone who was interested could use the links to get to the others. I've watched most of them, but there are still a few I haven't seen yet.

ET wasn't _THAT_ bad. I mean, it was Bad, but it was actually playable.

But yeah, the Capcom/Disney games were actually really good. I still enjoy Duck Tales and Rescue Rangers.

Did you ever have any idea what to DO in ET?

Yeah! You collect the bits of the phone from falling in pits while trying to escape the government dudes. Elliott's home is involved somehow, but i never really got that part. And once you get the phone, you wander around looking for the call space, and then call your mommy, then you wander around the initial screen lookin' for the landing site!

It might help that I actually had the cart/instruction booklet, because I was a sucker and and bought it at Toys R Us new. Granted, I was like 4, but still.
