Last night's Simpsons episode wasn't one of the better recent ones. It seemed to have quite a few reused jokes. I loved the "Monster Island is actually a peninsula!" joke from "Lisa on Ice," but they pretty much ripped it off wholesale for the reality TV bit at the beginning of the new episode. Then they used a similar Golden Ticket gag to the one they had used in "Homer: Bad Man." For that matter, the Dalai Lama has been to Springfield before, although he didn't actually appear on-screen, so I don't think that really counts as a recycled joke. The episode had some decent parts, like Lisa revealing how obvious it was that Homer was Pie Man, but overall, it just wasn't one of my favorites.

I pretty much concur (I taped it because of complete sickness on my part). It was amusing enough, and it wasn't, like, "Bart the Mother" or anything, but it just seemed like a really.... odd episode. Like "Well, we don't really have any ideas for this, but it seemed like a good idea at the time, so, well, now we've got to pad it out to a half hour. Hope it at least makes a little bit of sense."

Which... to be honest, it didn't really (make a whole lot of sense), but, well, at least it wasn't one of the egregiously bad ones of seasons past. (I have to admit, though, I am glad that Al Jean is back running the show. It's still not as good as it was in say, season 5 or 6, but it's waaay better than any of the Scully-run episodes. Those are _excruciating_.)

Also: This is the reason I mentioned the sick, but then forgot; my tape cut off the intro? Do you recall what the chalkboard gag (if there was one, I know a lot of the new eps have been cutting these) and couch gag were?

The couch gag showed the family sliding down poles (a la Batman) and ending up on the couch in superhero costumes. It had been shown before, but it was pretty appropriate for the new episode. There apparently was no blackboard.
