I just slept for what must have been upwards of ten hours, although it's hard to measure for sure, since it kept getting interrupted. I guess I needed it, but I get a little annoyed at myself when I end up spending most of my free time in bed.

To expound upon something that I mentioned in my recent voice post, Friday the 13th Part 7 must carry some kind of record for the number of times the protagonist THINKS they defeated Jason, only to have him get right back up again. And the defeat that finally takes (at least until the beginning of Part 9) is the dumbest one of all.

The new They Might Be Giants podcast (which is number 21A, depsite the fact that the last one was, like, 11 or something) has some new stuff in it, which is always a treat. "Vestibule" is kind of cool, and I'm liking it more after repeated listens. I like that it mentions Arlen Specter in such an apparently random way. "Greasy Kid Stuff," written for a radio show, has a nice build-up to it. The music at the beginning kind of reminds me of "Tiny Doctors." Bob Dylan introducing "Bangs" is pretty weird.

I've done alphabet surveys several times in the past, but this one that [livejournal.com profile] lozenger8 posted had enough interesting questions I hadn't seen before that I thought it was worth doing. The answers are from before I went to bed this morning.

THE LETTER A:
Are you available?: For weddings and bar mitzvahs? Yeah, sure.
What is your age?: 29
What annoys you?: Many things

THE LETTER B:
Do you live in a big house?: The hunchback in the attic rings the bells and gets ecstatic, but I always get to sleep at night.
When is your birthday?: 18 November
Who is your best friend?: [livejournal.com profile] bethje

THE LETTER C:
What's your favorite candy?: Jellybeans
Who's your crush?: Who says I have one?
When was the last time you cried?: I can't remember.

THE LETTER D:
Do you daydream?: Yes, all the time.
What's your favorite kind of dog?: The Temporal Hound
What day of the week is it?: Saturday

THE LETTER E:
How do you like your eggs?: Scrambled
Have you ever been in the emergency room?: Not that I can remember
What's the easiest thing ever to do?: Nothing's ever easy.

THE LETTER F:
Have you ever flown in a plane?: Yeah, a few times
Do you use fly swatters?: Not often, but I don't object to their use or anything.
Have you ever used a foghorn?: No

THE LETTER G:
Do you chew gum?: Not often, but sometimes
Are you a giver or a taker?: Both, at different times
Do you like gummy candies?: Yeah, especially worms. I refuse to try Gummy Pizza, or any of those other kinds in the gross shapes, even though they probably taste pretty much the same.

THE LETTER H:
How are you?: Still hungry, despite having just eaten
What's your height?: 5'10"
What color is your hair?: Brown

THE LETTER I:
What's your favorite ice cream?: Peach
Have you ever ice skated?: No. I tried roller skating back when I was in the sixth grade, but never ice.
Would you live in an igloo?: No, I can't stand the cold.

THE LETTER J:
What's your favorite jelly bean?: The fruit-flavored ones
Have you ever heard a really hilarious joke?: Yes, but I can't recall any of them just now.
Do you wear jewelry?: No

THE LETTER K:
Who do you want to kill?: This waitress
Do you want kids?: No way
Where did you have kindergarten?: At the elementary school. Two of them, in fact.

THE LETTER L:
Are you laid back?: No, I'd say I'm pretty far from being laid back.
Do you lie?: Rarely
Have you ever been to London?: No. I think I'd like to someday, though.

THE LETTER M:
What's your favorite movie?: Eh, I can't really choose one.
Do you still watch Disney movies?: Yeah, although not all that often these days. I missed their last few big animated features that came out in the theater.
What type of music you listen to?: Different kinds, but mostly nerdy pop/rock kind of stuff

THE LETTER N:
Do you have a nickname?: Some people call me Nate, and Beth calls me a whole bunch of different things.
Favorite number?: Well, I like round numbers.
Do you prefer night over day?: Depends on what I'm doing

THE LETTER O:
What's your one wish?: Success for myself and my friends, and that would include lots of money
Are you an only child?: No, I have a sister and a brother.
Do you wish this was over?: I guess not, although I wish there weren't so many questions in here that I'd already answered so many times before. I should just start cutting and pasting all of the actually interesting questions from surveys that I see, and then answering them after I'd gathered twenty or so of them.

THE LETTER P:
What one fear are you most paranoid about?: What, I can only choose one?
Do you love the color pink?: I don't know about "love," but I like it pretty well. I think the fact that it's forced upon girls causes some people to have irrational hatred for it.
Are you a perfectionist?: I wouldn't say so. Maybe in some areas.

THE LETTER Q:
Are you quick to judge people?: I don't know. I try not to be, but I can't say I always succeed.
Do you wish you were a Queen?: No, but being able to sing like Freddie Mercury would be pretty cool.
Have you ever rode a quad?: I'm just going to repeat Loz's answer. "No. Can I correct the grammar of that question?"

THE LETTER R:
Do you think you're always right?: No, I'm probably usually wrong.
Do you watch reality TV: I've watched some things that fall under the reality umbrella. I think the term is used way too liberally, though. Beth actually suggested the label "weekly elimination shows" for stuff of the American Idol/Dancing with the Stars variety, which I'd say makes sense.
What's a good reason to cry?: Being in pain

THE LETTER S:
Do you prefer sun or rain?: Sun, usually, but some types of rain are nice.
Do you like snow?: No, snow sucks.
What's your favorite season?: Spring, aside from the allergies

THE LETTER T:
What time is it?: 7:56 AM
What time did you wake up?: Around 7:15 PM
When was the last time you slept in a tent?: Hmm...probably when I was on my way back from college

THE LETTER U:
Do you own an umbrella?: I keep buying them and then misplacing them. I believe there's one in my car, though.
Can you ride a unicycle?: I've never tried, but I'm pretty sure the answer is no.
Have you ever said someone was ugly?: Yeah

THE LETTER V:
What's the worst veggie?: Probably one I've never tried
Where do you want to go on vacation?: I don't know. I guess I'd like to go to Europe someday. Or Oz, if it were real. {g}
Where was your last family vacation to?: It depends on what you'd call a family vacation, but I'm going to say Maine.

THE LETTER W:
What's your worst habit?: Yelling
Where do you live?: New Jersey
Who's your hero?: Erdrick of Aliahan

THE LETTER X:
Have you ever had an x-ray?: Yes
Have you seen the x-games?: No.
Do you own a xylophone?: Yes, I bought one at a store in the mall when I was in college.

THE LETTER Y:
Do you like the color yellow?: Yes, but why are pink and yellow singled out? There are a lot more colors, you know!
What year were you born in?: 1977
What's one thing you yearn for?: A living wage

THE LETTER Z:
What's your zodiac sign?: Scorpio
Do you believe in the zodiac?: No, but that's a pretty cool Rasputina song.
What's your favorite zoo animal?: I don't know. Elephants? It's been a while since I've been to the zoo.

And speaking of alphabet-related memes that I've already done, there's this from [livejournal.com profile] petie_s:

Comment, and I'll give you a letter; then you have to list 10 things you love that begin with that letter in your journal and give out some letters of your own.

My letter is T, so here we go:

1. They Might Be Giants, who have been my favorite band for almost ten years now
2. The Tin Woodman, who's surprisingly well-adjusted for someone made up entirely of prosthetic body parts. All he needed was a heart, and a plush one made by a humbug wizard serves him quite well.
3. Trivial Pursuit, a board game that even Beth says she enjoys. Those stupid sports questions are always irritating, though.
4. "Timber," a great number by Neko Case, which I believe was the first song of hers that I ever heard
5. Toad, from the Super Mario games, rockin' the vest-with-no-shirt look
6. Toilets. Okay, "love" is totally the wrong word here, but indoor plumbing is a convenience I don't think I could do without. The thought of relieving myself in a hole in the ground is just...ewww.
7. Trains, possibly the best form of public transportation
8. Technology, which definitely has its downsides, but without which I wouldn't be able to make this post. And that would be a shame, wouldn't it? {g}
9. Trampolines, which are pretty fun, although I haven't jumped on one in some time
10. "Till My Head Falls Off," a good song by the band in #1

That took longer than it probably should have. Maybe coming up with ten things beginning with T that I DON'T like would be easier. Let's see...termites, tapeworms, time (although I'll begrudgingly acknowledge its usefulness in certain situations), traffic, tickling, trouble, treachery, trash, training, and tripping. There we go.

Since I just did this not too long ago, I'll understand if no one wants to take a letter this time around. But if you do, just let me know.

I'll pick something out of the post at random and ask you to tell me more about the Temporal Hound, or known by its scientific name which I'm assuming is Canis temporalis.

Date: 2007-01-15 01:51 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] vovat.livejournal.com
One idea I have for an Oz story I'm sort of working on is a hound that can smell things that had been in an area long in the past, or would be there in the future. I don't necessarily know that I'll stick with that name, but it was the best kind of non-real dog I could think of at the time. Maybe I should have said Cerberus.

Date: 2007-01-16 04:15 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] vilajunkie.livejournal.com
Ooh! I like that idea. The Temporal Hound (or the Watch Dog) is cool. Cerberus is just overrated.

Date: 2007-01-17 03:54 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] vovat.livejournal.com
The Watch Dog? Like the one from The Phantom Tollbooth, you mean?

Date: 2007-01-18 03:08 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] vilajunkie.livejournal.com
Exactly! When you wrote "Temporal Hound", I immediately thought, "Oh, that's just a fancier term for the Watch Dog from The Phantom Tollbooth." Wow, do our minds work on the same wavelengths or what? I might have to make you my new best friend; we've probably read all the same fantasy. Incidentally, did you know that The Phantom Tollbooth was made into a cartoon movie?

Date: 2007-01-20 12:14 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] vovat.livejournal.com
The Phantom Tollbooth was first recommended to me by an old girlfriend of my dad's. I didn't get along with her at all, and I'm sure the feeling was mutual, but she did have good taste in books. She also got me interested in Madeline L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time series. She actually went on to write an award-winning children's book, which I've been reluctant to read. But anyway, yeah, TPT was a great book, and I have seen the animated version.

Ooh, the Wrinkle in Time series is another good one. Because of L'Engle, I knew what mitochondria were even before I learned about them in bio class. It would be interesting to see if scientists really do find subcellular particles or creatures living in mitochondria and call them farandolae, as she does.

Yeah, it was pretty much the same way for me. It's cool when you find knowledge in unexpected ways. {g}

You live for 6 years with a pink room and see how you like it! ;)

I think you're just trying to be anti-feminine! You probably don't like princesses, ponies, or being barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen, either!

From: [identity profile] bethje.livejournal.com
Why do you hate dogs?

Date: 2007-01-15 01:53 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] vovat.livejournal.com
I don't. I just don't know that I really have a favorite breed.

Date: 2007-01-15 10:05 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bethje.livejournal.com
Then name a bunch of breeds. And you're always saying you like schnauzers for some reason.

Date: 2007-01-17 03:55 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] vovat.livejournal.com
I do like schnauzers. And dachshunds, even though they're needy. But there are a lot of dog breeds I've never really seen much of, especially the bigger kinds.

Date: 2007-01-18 03:21 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bethje.livejournal.com
So I guess you need to know every book/song/album/food/etc. before you can chose a favorite.

Date: 2007-01-20 12:17 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] vovat.livejournal.com
Okay, I guess I COULD have a favorite breed, but I can't say that I DO.

Date: 2007-01-14 05:16 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] l8erngr8er.livejournal.com
OMG, I love Toad too. And Trivial Pursuit. And I like "Timber" as well.

I'd take a letter.

But what about Toadsworth?

Anyway, your letter is F.

Date: 2007-01-15 08:03 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] l8erngr8er.livejournal.com
I have never seen Toadsworth before, but I def. like him.

Date: 2007-01-17 03:57 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] vovat.livejournal.com
He's the Princess' steward. I think his first appearance might have been in Super Mario Sunshine, but he's been a pretty regular character since then.

Regarding #3, I'd argue that a boar is a kind of pig. But I thought I probably had #1 wrong. He was just the only demon with an A name I could remember. I DID remember Vassenego, Urglefloggah, and Quetzovercoatl, but none of them were of any use to me in this situation. {g}

As for your letter...well, how about A?

Date: 2007-01-15 02:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] marquis86.livejournal.com
well yes a boar is a pig but i wanted boar and pig for the two questions so that they would be different... hehe.
lemme go figure out what to do with this A then! :)

I used to have a dachshund when I was little. A dachshund/beagle really. When she had to be put to sleep, my dad thought I might be upset and tried to have a really gentle conversation with me about death. My response was to request that we now get a pig and keep it in the mud at the end of the driveway.

Can I have a letter, too?
