It's New Year's Day, and I'm at home using the computer. Pathetic, isn't it? [livejournal.com profile] bethje doesn't want to get up, and my roommates went to a party. The thing is, I don't really care that much. I'm a little annoyed because Beth said she WOULD get up, but I'm not someone who thinks I HAVE to do something special at New Year's. (My roommate Dorothea apparently is, based on what she was telling me a few hours ago.) I guess a lot of it's kind of like what I mentioned in this post about not finding holidays as exciting as I did as a kid. I used to go to bed pretty early back in my elementary school days, so staying up until midnight was a big deal. Now midnight is when my shift at work starts, so it's nothing special anymore. I remember one time when I was a kid, and we had pizza at midnight. I wish I had some pizza now. I guess I could heat up a frozen one, but that's not exactly the same.

A lot of adults seem to enjoy ringing in the new year by drinking heavily, but I don't really drink. (I put the "really" in there because I'm quite literal-minded, and I do OCCASIONALLY drink, but it's VERY occasional. I'm not sure I've had any alcoholic beverages since the summer.) It's pretty much the same way with St. Patrick's Day and Mardi Gras, and probably some other holidays I'm forgetting. Am I really missing something by not Going Out And Drinking? It's just never sounded very fun to me. Perhaps I could stand to do more of the Going Out part, but that would mean having friends, wouldn't it? Besides, on the rare occasions I do hang out with people who aren't Beth, it often seems like I have the most fun just sitting around and talking.

Since I have a paid account now, I'm thinking I should make a voice post, so everyone can hear how stupid I sound. Are all of the numbers you can call to make voice posts free on an Unlimited Nights and Weekends cell phone plan? I assume they are, since they just look like local numbers, but I don't want to end up getting an enormous charge on my phone bill.

So, yeah. Happy New Year, everybody!

I drank more than I have ever dranked in my life, and I was somehow not hung over. I think I must have a ridiculously large constitution (seriously, I drank a lot), but I was also in the comfort of my own home, with family, so, you know...

Happy New Year :D

You know what? I think going out and getting drunk is really lame. But in reading what you just wrote, since you drank a lot all at home, I find something cozy and positive in that. I can't explain why, but you made it sound really nice to me.

Odd for me, especially since I've heard that all of my grandmother's brothers and sisters either were alcoholics or married one. {g}

I'm not calling you an alcoholic!

:D

I think going out and drinking is lame too, which is why I've never done it. The only reason I drank this year (last year?) was a feeling that I had to do it at some point, so it might as well be now.

I don't think I'll do it again, though. It really didn't seem worth the expense!

I'm sorry I dissed you. You deserve better.

Also, you can call those number from my house, if you like, and it won't cost.

It's okay. It gave me time to catch up on computery stuff. I still haven't gotten around to updating my web page or cleaning my room, though, and I need to do both of those.

Also, you can call those number from my house, if you like, and it won't cost.

Unless they're those crazy numbers that connect you to places in the Caribbean and end up costing hundreds of dollars. Actually, I think one of them is supposed to be local.

We're more of the stay in and play board games and drink crowd. I agree though that GOING OUT and drinking isn't that fun. Plus it's super expensive!

I wouldn't imagine that staying in and drinking is THAT cheap, either, although I'm sure it's much more so than buying drinks at a bar or whatever. The mark-up is ridiculous. I guess you're paying for the atmosphere. :P

Sufjan Stevens also shares your opinion about NYE in that he doesn't like the artificiality of having to party at a certain time. He said that in a Rolling Stone interview.

The only times I've gone out were for a specific musical act, otherwise we'll sit at home and fall asleep to a Star Wars moive. :P

I guess I can kind of see it if partying and drinking aren't things you do all that often. But there are so many people who go to booze-filled parties constantly anyway, yet still apparently feel that they're obligated to go to such parties on New Year's (or Mardi Gras, or Homecoming, or what-have-you). If anything, shouldn't these people celebrate by NOT going out and drinking, since that's what would be different from their usual routine?
