I was thinking the other day about how long it's been since I've really taken a trip. Not that I ever took them that often in my childhood, but there were times when I'd go somewhere with one or the other of my parents. We went to Maine a few times, for instance. I kind of miss it, and it might be nice to take a trip WITHOUT being crammed in the car with my siblings and everybody's stuff. It's not exactly financially feasible at this point, though. The catch is that, if I were to get a full-time job, I'd have more money, but also less time in which to do things like trip-taking. Besides, I'm sure it would be difficult for me to be away from home (and the computer) for several days.

Also, since I received such a positive reaction to sharing my monkey story a little while ago, here's some other stuff I wrote when I was in second grade. These tales come from my January 1986 journal.

The Ocean is a home of many animals. Fish, eels, sharks, and
WHALES!

Way over in the middle of the Ocean is Whale Island. Narwhale lives near this island.

One day, Narwhale had a party. But, Mr. Mister Shark tried to eat them. He chased them and rattled the walls! He ate confetti! He threw cakes! Mr. Eel slapped him. It didn't stop him! He knocked Righty over! He even upset Brian! He pulled off Brian's flipper!

Mr. Mister Shark chased them all to Whale Island and up The Palm Tree!

But, Narwhale managed to get out! He swam into an underwater cave and turned into Super-Whale! He came out and threw Mr. Mister Shark onto land! Mr. Mister Shark dried and died!

(My teacher replied to the last sentence with "in that order?". And I can't say I remember who Righty and Brian were, although I assume they were other sea creatures. There are illustrations, but these characters aren't pictured.)

And this there's this really short one:

Dictionary Bear lives in the dictionary of The Bee Of The Sea right near the word bear. The Bee Of The Sea and The Fly Of The Sky were scared! Caesar Spider was under their bed and Dictionary Bear in their dictionary.

Dictionary Bear's life is not an easy one. He has trouble getting his dinner.

(At this point, I go right into a totally unrelated story about dinosaurs, to which the teacher said, "Super imaginative. What ever happened to the Bee of the Sea and the Fly of the Sky?" My answer? "Dictionary Bear caught them!" She really should have learned to stop asking me for resolutions to my stories, as they pretty much always resulted in someone's death.)

And finally, here's a quiz result:

Which Obscure Clue Character are YOU?!

You are Captain Brown! Featured in 1986's Super Cluedo Challenge, you were one of the FIRST new characters added to the Cluedo mythos in 40 years! A stoic old sea salt, you tell like it is, and are full of old fashioned sensibility. You faded into obscurity, however, and paved the way for two later male characters using a brown color scheme.
Take this quiz!

Wow, Clue (or "Cluedo," to any of you non-American types) is a game I haven't played in ages. Actually, it's been too long since I've played ANY board games. My dad was the one I'd usually play them with, and now he lives nowhere near me. [livejournal.com profile] bethje really doesn't like games at all.

If you were my student, I would adore you, OMFG.

He ate confetti! --- Best line ever.

And you really were obsessed with the exclamation point! Everything you said was something that needed that extra enthusiastic punch! This amuses me!

Oh man, you're stories of 20 years ago were so awesome. I wish you still wrote like that. Maybe your mommy put LSD in your applesauce.

I just have to second-- or third or fourth or whatever-- the deep amusement at your elementary school stories. They are most definitely fun reads!

Well, the second grade me was socially awkward and kind of a know-it-all. In other words, very little has changed. {g}

Looking back at the story, I find that I had sympathy for both Dictionary Bear AND the insects, as opposed to the "sharks are pure evil" morality play of the other one.

Hey, what would YOU do if you were a party-crashing shark?

My overuse of exclamation points makes the lines where I just used an ordinary period kind of stand out. I guess Mr. Eel didn't slap Mr. Mister Shark very hard, since that happens in one of the few non-exclamatory sentences.

Sometimes not until after you've been working there for a year or more, though.

Maybe. She taught me to eat just about everything else I didn't really like in applesauce.

Thanks! The only sad part is that I apparently wrote more interesting stuff when I was eight than I do now that I'm 28.

I have never had a job where the wait was more than 3 months. Most of my jobs you accrue starting from day one.

Speaking of which, though, a friend/coworker of mine is a HUGE Oz fan--movie only, really, but huge in that respect at least; and anyway today at work I was editing one of my books and she asked me what I was doing and I told her and for some reason out of nowhere she said "Is it an OZ story?!" (I should point out that she is also mildly retarded, so sometimes talking to her is very much like talking to a child-- you're not really sure how her brain got where it did). And I said, "No-- but, you know what actually? I have a friend who writes Oz stories!" She asked if I could bring some in, and I said I thought you had some posted online actually and I could send her the address... SOOOOO, do you in fact still have some Oz stories posted somewhere? Particularly if any of them have any of the movie characters in them!

You can still see them here (http://members.aol.com/jinnicky/stories.html). I'm not sure how much longer that page will be up, but it's there for now. The main characters from the movie do show up in the stories, sometimes in major roles, but they act more like they do in the books than in the movie. Still, I usually do give background information, so anyone should be able to follow them without having read any of the books.

As with most benefits, the people who get the most paid time off tend to be the ones who need it least.
