Just a few brief items before I go to bed:

1. The description for the CHICKEN pot pie I ate a few hours ago says (and I quote):

"This great tasting, top and bottom crust pot pie is packed with large chunks of tender turkey, our classic mix of vegetables and a delicious homestyle gravy."

That's a pretty crazy typo, isn't it? That's like how the title verso page of my copy of The Glass Cat of Oz identifies it as The Magic Dishpan of Oz.

2. There was a story on the news about a murder, the victim of which was described as an honors student. I don't mean to miss seeing the forest for the trees here, but how is the fact that she was an honors student relevant? Would the murder have been less tragic if she'd gotten bad grades? I've noticed a general tendency in the news media to talk up victims of murder and other violent crimes, as if the fact that they're human beings somehow isn't enough.

3. Kirsten Powers was backing up Bill O'Reilly on the proposition that an anti-Condi cartoon in a Middle Eastern newspaper was racist. While it's quite possible that they were right about this, what about Kirsten's comment from a few weeks ago? Isn't it rather hypocritical for her to point out other people's racism?

Dude, that's funny. My grandfather tried to argue the point a few Thanksgivings ago that chicken salad was really turkey salad. A few weeks later, I bought a Caesar salad with chicken but it had "turkey" on the label. I cut it out and sent it to my mom.

I'm really amused that you just HAPPENED to have a relevant icon for this!

I'm amused by both the pot pie typo and the Oz typo, though the latter is much more hilarious!

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you very, very much for sending me the mixes! Today I'm going to be driving to New Paltz, so they'll surely get some play in my CD player (which is connected through the tapedeck since I'm too cheap to buy an actual CD player for my car). Anyways, much appreciation for them. Are you interested in my miserable/depressing compilation? I haven't made any other particular mixes in a while, but if you have any sort of requests, I'll see what I can cook up.

You're welcome. I hope you find something you like on them! And I'd be glad to receive a copy of your depressing mix. (Wait, does that sound weird? "Glad" and "depressing" in the same sentence?)

This kind of statement always bugs me, too, like when there's a bombing and they say "x number killed, including 4 Americans," or there's a car crash and there are "x number dead, including somebody's 2-month old baby." I guess we're supposed to care more because they're our countrymen or because apparently it's sadder when it's a small child, but it just makes me really angry, because what they're really doing is devaluing all non-Americans, or favoring all children over any adult, or whatever. It's really obnoxious; I don't agree that certain humans are inherently more valuable than others as they are apparently trying to make me believe.

Yeah, identifying the number of Americans killed or injured in a foreign disaster is another thing that annoys me. In a way, I do think it's natural to feel more upset about things that happen to people who live nearby, or are somehow connected to you. Part of it is probably the "hey, that could have been me" factor. I'll admit that September 11 shook me up more than some more devastating attacks in other countries. But I'm still not sure why I'm supposed to be more concerned because some of the people killed (or hurt, or whatever) in a tragedy are from the same arbitrarily defined country as I am.
