Video Killed the LiveJournal Friends Page
Jul. 15th, 2006 09:52 pmSo many of the posts on my friends page nowadays consist of links to videos. And since I'm often unable to watch these videos right away, they've been accumulating in my memories. I probably won't end up watching most of them, though. Sometimes I get the idea that some of y'all do nothing all day BUT search the Internet for videos. This isn't really a complaint or anything, but it DOES tend to make catching up on my friends list more time-consuming.
I had a dream last night where
bethje and I picked up
3x1minus1 at a train station, and she looked nothing like any pictures I've seen of her. There was also a part of the dream where my mom was saying something about broccoli and photography.
Based on what I've heard on MySpace and Amazon, there's a good chance I'll give the new They Might Be Giants tribute album a miss. I did like what I heard of the "It's Not My Birthday" cover, though, and it goes without saying that I want to hear all of Frank Black's "Road Movie To Berlin." So I don't know. It just seems to be the general rule with tribute albums that there will be a few really good covers buried in the midst of songs that either: 1) sound exactly like the originals, but with worse singers; or 2) manage to remove the best aspects of the originals.
And finally, I stole this from
rockinlibrarian:
I wanted to run an experiment. I'm just curious how many people stop and read this journal. So, anyone who is reading this-- ESPECIALLY if you just wandered onto here and I have no idea who you are, leave a comment, even if just to say "hi," or "purple" or something. Actually, also tell me how you wandered onto here. I'm curious how many random people who aren't on my friends list-- or even me on theirs-- wander by and actually read this. I'm also curious how many people who ARE on my friends list actually read this. So, drop me a note, random people!
I doubt anyone will actually reply, but it's worth a shot, right?

I'm making the icons you requested :)

Date: 2006-07-16 02:52 pm (UTC)I also saw the "Dead" video, and it was pretty good, but not wonderfully amazing or anything. Most likely, I'll end up buying the album a few months down the road, when everyone else has forgotten about it. Then I'll write a track-by-track review in my journal, where my comments on most of the songs will consist of "this wasn't very good" or "this was too much like the original."
It really seems like they could have gotten more artists who are either friendly with TMBG or known to be influenced by them. If, say, Laura Cantrell or Corn Mo were on there in addition to Frank, I'd probably get it without a moment's hesitation. As it is, I've never even heard of half the artists. That's not to say that I mind there being some unknowns (especially since appearing on a tribute album can be a good way to BECOME known), but it could have used more...well, not even star power, but other artists TMBG fans are likely to know. And am I forgetting something, or are all of the lead vocalists male? One thing I liked about the YFF tribute was that they had a few female singers. Sheesh, you'd think they could have at least gotten Robin Goldwasser to sing something, right?
