Yesterday, [livejournal.com profile] bethje and I went up to New York City to see The Producers on Broadway with my dad, Barbara, and her friend. I actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I didn't love the original movie, which I saw for the second time about a week ago in preparation for the show (the first time was probably over fifteen years ago). It was pretty funny, but most of what happened prior to actually producing Springtime for Hitler had a tendency to drag. In the musical, they jettisoned some of the early slow scenes, and added songs to others. I did miss the hippie guy playing Hitler, but I liked the expanded role for Ulla, and some of the additional stuff with Franz Liebkind. I've heard from the people who've seen it that the movie version of the play wasn't very good, because they didn't tone down the over-the-top stuff that worked on the stage, but not so well in a movie. This is quite possible, but as an actual Broadway show, it's pretty good.

After the play, we had dinner at the Hard Rock Café. I'd never been there before, and I don't have any real desire to go back, but it was all right for this one time. I had a bacon cheeseburger that was okay, but not great. I have to wonder why they don't have rock-themed names for their food, but then, I've always had somewhat of a bizarre fondness for tacky themed names. Not necessarily the places that HAVE the tacky themes, but the themed names themselves.

Today is my sixth anniversary of dating Beth. I tried to bring over her presents about half an hour ago, but she didn't want to get out of bed. I guess I'll try again a little later. Our anniversary is also [livejournal.com profile] aliste's birthday, as well as that of They Might Be Giants drummer Marty Beller. So happy anniversary to Beth, and happy birthday to the other two people I mentioned (not that Marty is likely to read this :P).

Yes, the latest film of The Producers was a little too over the top, but I still liked it. I'm jealous that you got to see the production live.

The original film is really great; I love it. The new film, I thought was an abomination. I didn't see the actual play though -- I figure the play would probably be somewhere in the middle.

Also, happy aninvininversary!

I enjoyed the original film. I wanted to see the recent film version, but never got around to it. As for the musical version, my husband hates musicals and didn't want to go see it when it came through the area last year. (He would have seen the recent movie version though -- just for Uma Thurman...)

Happy anniversary! :)

I'm not the biggest fan of musical theater, but I don't have the utter loathing for it that a lot of people seem to, either. It's fun occasionally.

And thanks!
