Mix and Match
May. 29th, 2006 09:25 pmI'm currently working on two themed mixes. One was inspired by
revme's mix of longer songs, and one of the tracks is actually the same, too. My rules were slightly different, in that I was okay with extended live versions (well, ONE extended live version, anyway), but I also avoided remixes and medleys. Here's the tracklist I came up with:
Blast Off - Frank Black and the Catholics
Yes, Anastasia - Tori Amos
Smokin' Joe Clark - Hypnotic Clambake
The Mariner's Revenge Song - The Decemberists
Stay Loose - Belle and Sebastian
Dr. Bernice - Cracker
Your Day Will Come - The Minus 5
Old Downtown - Laura Cantrell
The World Inside - Sgt. Major
Albuquerque - "Weird Al" Yankovic [1]
That actually worked out to a few minutes longer than 80 minutes. I thought I'd be able to make up for it by cutting out ending silence and the spoken-word introduction to the Clambake song, but it was still too long. So I ended up cutting more parts that weren't totally essential, like the tail ends of fade-outs. I guess that's a little like pounding the puzzle pieces to make them fit, but hey, I think this is a good tracklist, and better to take out a few little bit than entire songs, right?
The other is an idea that I basically stole from
bethje, which is a seasonal mix. I included songs with "summer" in the title, or that were about summer, or that just seemed kind of summer-y. And it only comes out to 67 minutes, so I can easily put on some more stuff. Any ideas?
Summer's Cauldron - XTC
Big Dipper - Cracker
July, July! - Decemberists
Summertime Climb - The Flashing Lights
Unimaginable Zero Summer - The Young Fresh Fellows
Flowers On The Wall - The Statler Brothers [2]
Summer Hot As This - Andy Partridge
Summer Breeze - They Might Be Giants
It's Summertime - The Flaming Lips
The Humid Press Of Days - Camper Van Beethoven
Velouria - Pixies
Summerland - YFF
That Summer Feeling - Jonathan Richman
Summer Lies - The Magnetic Fields
Indian Summer - Tori Amos [3]
The Feel Good Sublet - TMBG
A Summer Wasting - B&S
Real Summer - Future Bible Heroes
In The Summer - Fastbacks
If anyone is interested in either or both of these mixes, let me know. Maybe I'll just end up throwing them in with the other mixes I'm making for people. Speaking of which, I should be able to get started on them soon. I should have e-mailed everyone who was interested by now. Is there anyone I missed?
[1] Speaking of this song,
onib sent me a link to this comic about a month ago, and I just recently got the chance to look at it. What's cool is that it uses Super Mario Bros. characters, so if you want to see Wart as a one-nostriled hermaphrodite, now is your chance!
[2] This isn't specifically a summer song, I suppose, but Beth said it made her think of summer, and I noticed the uncanny similarity it has to the YFF song "Unimaginable Zero Summer." So I put the two of them together on the mix.
[3] If I can find some better songs, this one is probably hitting the cutting room floor. It's long, and not really one of my favorite Tori songs. That's not to say I would mind terribly if it stayed, either.

| You think like a cat, you move like a cat...you're almost there. So what's missing? There are still certain vestiges of humanity within you, unconscious modes of behaviour that belong to the inferior human world. Divest yourself of them, and your body will follow to the glorious feline realm your mind has already entered. |

Date: 2006-05-30 08:24 pm (UTC)I've sent mix CD's to England, Spain, and France before. I doubt Australia would be that much more trouble. The most annoying thing is filling out those customs cards.
And you're listening to a song from my mixtape - coincidence, or did it finally work?
I got it to work. You'll notice that I was listening to it when making my most recent post, too. I should have some comments on it soon, but I want to listen to it again first.
