But I know that I was your favorite
May. 26th, 2006 04:48 pmI've been thinking a little recently about my different degrees of fandom for bands. For me to really consider myself a fan of a band, I usually have to be familiar with the majority of their music. Otherwise, I can LIKE a band, but I feel wrong saying that I'm really a fan, or that they're one of my favorites. Does anyone else feel that way?
My core of five favorite bands has been steady for a while now, and it consists of They Might Be Giants, XTC, Frank Black, the Young Fresh Fellows, and Camper Van Beethoven. I tend to lump in related bands as well, which means that Mono Puff, the Pixies, the Minus 5, the Fastbacks, Sgt. Major, and Cracker are favorites by association. Not all of these related bands would have ranked as highly if I'd been evaluating them individually, but I think it looks a little tacky to list a bunch of favorites that are made up of the same people. ("Uh, yeah, my five favorite bands are TMBG, Mono Puff, John Linnell and the Statesmen, Sapphire Bullets, and Hello the Band.") The top, especially, will probably remain in those positions even if those bands never put anything else out, or if they start putting out stuff that sucks (assuming that's even possible).
Beyond the top five, it gets a little trickier. Weird Al is probably always going to be somewhere in the Top Ten, just because he was the first musician I ever really got into. I'm sure I could make separate lists of bands that have both really awesome and pretty mediocre albums (Blur, the Posies), bands that were great but didn't last long enough (Moxy Früvous), bands that haven't had a chance to put out a lot of stuff yet but where everything they HAVE released is excellent (the Dresden Dolls, the Ditty Bops, Laura Cantrell, the Decemberists). I guess to really be a favorite of mine, you have to have put out a fair amount of stuff, and it has to be largely consistent in quality. I think it also helps to be somewhat nerdy and gimmicky.
And since I'm listening to music on random now anyway, I might as well go ahead and do this (courtesy of
3x1minus1.
1. Put your music player of choice on shuffle
2. Scene one = first song played, scene two = second, so on.
3. No cheating/skipping
4. Pass it on
Opening Credits: Chaos By Design - Colorwheel (AKA TMBG)
Waking Up: Michigan Militia - Moxy Früvous
An Ordinary Day: Ballad Of The Lonely Argonaut - Beulah
The First Date: In Heaven - Pixies
Falling in Love: 99 Girls - The Groovie Ghoulies (Young Fresh Fellows cover)
The Rumble: Life Is Grand - Camper Van Beethoven
The Break-up: Bright College Days - Tom Lehrer
Getting Back Together: Pull Me In Tighter - Rilo Kiley
Life's Okay: Statue Of Liberty - Joe Jackson (XTC cover)
The Mental Breakdown: Down To The Well - Pixies
Cruising: How Can I Sing Like A Girl? - TMBG
The Flashback: You'll Miss Me - TMBG
The Frat Party: I Think I'm Starting To Lose It - Frank Black and the Catholics
Everybody Dance Now: Yes, Anastasia - Tori Amos
Regretting: There's A Girl - The Ditty Bops
The Long Night Alone: Cavity Search - "Weird Al" Yankovic
A Death: High On A Hilltop - Laura Cantrell
Some of those would have made sense if they'd appeared in a different order. Like, "Bright College Days" would work for the frat party, and "I Think I'm Starting To Lose It" could be the breakdown theme. And for the dance song, did my player purposely choose one of the least danceable songs on there? I actually like the idea of "Chaos By Design" as opening credit music, though.
It might be fun to do this again but with songs that actually make sense, but I don't feel like it at the moment.

Date: 2006-06-01 06:22 pm (UTC)Yeh, I definitely do, which is why it really bugs me when people will say something like "Oh I love TMBG so much" and then end up just being Floodies or whatever. It's fine to like a band without being hardcore about it, but don't claim to be!

Haha I totally used to do that.
