I always have to wonder why musicians will always say things like, "Our new album is finished! It'll be out in five months." Why the delay? I'm sure there's some crazy business-related reason for it. It's just that the album pretty much always leaks out well ahead of time, and people will download the songs. If the record companies are as determined to prevent illegal downloading as they pretend to be, shouldn't they, like, put out the legal alternative sooner?

I'm way behind on my friends page. While scanning it, though, I noticed a few interesting memes. [livejournal.com profile] zaph, [livejournal.com profile] little_octagon, [livejournal.com profile] travspence, and [livejournal.com profile] countblastula all did this. There were two versions, but I did the one where I post more results. (In the other, people only posted two births and one death.)

Go to Wikipedia and look up your birth day (excluding the year). List three neat facts, three births, and three deaths in your journal, including the year.

November 18

Neat facts:

1095 - The Council of Clermont, called by Pope Urban II to discuss sending the First Crusade to the Holy Land, begins.
1307 - According to legend, William Tell shoots an apple off his son's head.
1985 - Calvin and Hobbes, a comic strip by Bill Watterson, is first published.

Births:

1861 - Dorothea Dix, American activist (d. 1887)
1928 - Mickey Mouse, Cartoon Mouse
1939 - Margaret Atwood, Canadian writer

Deaths:

1922 - Marcel Proust, French novelist (b. 1871)
1962 - Niels Bohr, Danish physicist, Nobel Prize laureate (b. 1885)
1994 - Cab Calloway, American bandleader (b. 1907)

Speaking of birthdates, here's some numerology thing from [livejournal.com profile] 3x1minus1:

Calculate your lifepath number by adding your birthdate digits, and your attitude number by adding the month and date digits. And get your numerical results described here.

1+1+1+8+1+9+7+7=35
3+5=8

1+1+1+8=11
1+1=2

EIGHTS do not feel safe unless they have found a way to establish financial security. It is difficult for the 8s to take advice. When they make a choice, they must feel it is their decision, NOT SOMEONE ELSES. As a result, they do tend to learn the hard way. 8s are very honest and by being so blunt, they unintentionally hurt feelings. Although they can sometimes appear insensitive, what is going on inside them is the exact opposite. They do feel deeply about everything that goes on in their lives.

The 2 Attitude is easy going. They are very good observers. They're also drawn to anything regarding psychic ability, and often may experience déjà vu. It is not uncommon for them to have a dream that comes true. They are in touch with their intuition and the metaphysical side of life. They do have compassion for people and are fascinated with people's stories. They are seldom bored.

I originally messed up and posted the lifepath results for three, rather than eight. It turns out that three was more accurate for me. And the attitude result is totally wrong. I'm pretty much the complete opposite of easy-going. I live on my nerves. Really, though, numerology makes astrology looks like a hard science. You can manipulate a set of numbers to come up with just about any result. That's how numbers work.

A much more accurate form of numerology is the one that [livejournal.com profile] shadarko brought up in this post. {g} That is, incidentally, the source of my subject line, in case anyone was wondering.

Okay, I'd better get some breakfast.

Wait, shouldn't your lifepath number 8, not 3? Either way, yes, it seems a huge crock.

Yeah, you're right. I was in kind of a hurry when I wrote up the entry. It turns out that the results for eight are even LESS accurate.

Wow, yeah, I don't know how my lifepath result could get LESS accurate. But then, my astrological sign isn't accurate either, so maybe I just have the wrong birthday.

Yes, maybe it's a case of the astrologers being right, and the the universe being wrong. {g}

I think I'm a typical Scorpio in some ways. But then, I probably also fit traits of all the other signs. People tend to notice similarities more than differences, which is part of how the whole thing works.

Basically, it's artwork, legal/rights wrangling, pressing, distribution, promotin and all that sorta stuff. So, yeah, basically business stuff, heh.

Dorothea Dix was cool. I wonder why she died so young.

I shot myself because I do what I want

While I can sometimes accept astrology, numerology never seems right to me. I' (supposedly) a lifepath 9 (natural leader) and an attitude 5 (playful). Based on my astrological personality (which actually fits me fairly well), I should probably be a lifepath 2 (peace-maker) and attitude 2 (easy-going) -- either of those results would mesh better with my Meyers-Briggs and Enneagram types. However, someone who truly believes in numerology would probably just tell me that 9 & 5 are my natural states and that I force myself into other numbers.

Well, one thing about numerology is that, even if it IS accurate, aren't our months and years pretty arbitrarily defined? The year I was born was 1977 because someone (who was probably wrong) THOUGHT it was 1977 years after Jesus was born. And our months are all different lengths, and don't totally coincide with the phases of the Moon. So even if there WERE something to it, wouldn't we have to adjust the numbers so that they would be based on nature, rather than politics and such? At least astrology seems to have its roots in something a little less arbitrary.
