As I indicated in the edit to the last post, it was actually intended for the [livejournal.com profile] discworld community. I meant to just go ahead and fix it quickly before anyone noticed, but the Internet connection decided (well, okay, it probably didn't "decide" as such) to get screwy, and I didn't get the chance to correct the mistake until after work. I'm sure that, if nothing else, you could tell from the tags that it wasn't a typical entry, since I don't usually use ones that specific. I DO think it might make sense to go back and add some extra tags for series I talk about a lot (like Discworld, Harry Potter, and Narnia; Oz already has its own tag), so they aren't all just tagged as "books." I could do the same thing for bands I discuss often, but I probably won't. Obviously, this would be time-consuming, so it'll be a while before I can get around to it. Any other ideas for tags I should use?

Anyway, as long as I'm talking about things from books that most people on my friends list haven't read, and probably wouldn't care about even if they HAD read the relevant book, well, Kabumpo in Oz is one of my favorite books in the Oz series. No matter how many times I read it, though, I'm always bothered by how Ruth Plumly Thompson apparently thought Ruggedo was only one foot tall. It's only in this one book; Pirates in Oz specifically mentions him as being four times that height. Weird errors can like can really spoil a nit-picker's appreciation of a book, you know? Still, it's an excellent book, and I'm considering writing a brief epilogue for it, telling how the people in Pumperdink would react to what happened with Prince Pompadore.

Incidentally, one of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show cartoons (the only one in which Bowser didn't appear, actually), there was a minor character named Prince Pompadour. A coincidence, or an intentional reference by someone who'd read the Oz books? I'm inclined to think it was the former, but you never know, do you?

They're raising the legal age for purchasing cigarettes in New Jersey to 19. Do they really think that's going to affect anything at all?

I've been having some crazy dreams recently. The night before last, I had one where I was in an attic, and the Pope was also up there, consecrating things by spraying them with a hose. And last night, I was driving with [livejournal.com profile] bethje down her street, but trying to steer the car from the passenger seat. When I got back into the driver's seat, I thought it was much easier, but then I realized that the seat was broken. If I leaned back in it, it would move back itself. So I dropped Beth off somewhere, and drove to a mall in Center City Philadelphia, where I tried to find a new seat. I tried one at a store, but it had the exact same problem my old one did. At another point, I was driving in a housing development behind a truck that was trying to pass a bus, but kept swerving. Also in the dream, there was some convention that I think Neko Case was supposed to attend, some stuff about my searching for some old papers in a closet, a walk with my mom through the city, somebody who kept calling me because he thought I was selling hot TV sets, and talk of people violently committing suicide with spears or something. Bizarre combination, huh?

I don't think that's at all accurate. But maybe everybody gets a high popularity score, just to make us feel good about ourselves. {g}

Terry Pratchett

Hey, this is more just for you than your hournal at large, but I never see you online. Have you heard of a book called strata by terry pratchett? I came across it at my local library last week, and I had never seen or heard of it before. It was pretty odd. It obviously contained a lot of the precurser ideas to the discworld series, but it was a science fiction novel with lot of weird religious commentary.

I've heard of it, but I've never read it. The only non-Discworld book of Terry's that I've read was Good Omens. I'm somewhat apprehensive about the other ones, but I'll probably try a few of them someday.

It is science fiction-y (strata). Not as good or as funny as the discwolrd books but interesting to see some of the thought processes leading up to discworld.
