I just finished re-reading Men at Arms, and having also re-read Night Watch recently, I found this passage interesting:
"At times like this the image of old Sergeant Kepple floated across his memory. He'd been head of the Watch when Vimes was a recruit. And, soon afterwards, he retired. They'd all clubbed together and bought him a cheap watch, one of those that'd keep going for a few years until the demon inside it evaporated."
So, was Kepple the immediate successor to the late Keel? I guess that would be the safest assumption. I'm pretty sure he isn't mentioned in NW, but maybe he was hired from Forn Parts, as Keel himself was. Or is this a case of alternate pasts?
Also, does the fact that Kepple's watch was demon-powered mean he retired AFTER the events of The Colour of Magic? I seem to Twoflower's demon-powered watch being a novelty in Ankh-Morpork.
EDIT: This post was actually intended for the
discworld community. I always mess up when trying to post to communities.
