Last night's movie was Caligula, the historic/pornographic film credited to "Penthouse Films International." ([livejournal.com profile] bethje wondered how many films they actually put out.) There were a lot of sex scenes, and a lot of bare asses. Some of it came off as a bit gratuitous, like this one girl-on-girl scene that didn't seem to have anything to do with anything else. For the most part, though, I think it set the mood more than anything else. I mean, you can't make a movie about a crazy, perverted emperor without at least implying some crazy and perverted stuff, right? I was wondering how much of what was shown was historically accurate, and a look at the wikipedia article shows that sources describing Caligula's reign are somewhat questionable, which is to say that the filmmakers didn't make up most of the stuff he does in the movie, but it's possible that critical Roman historians did, or at least exaggerated true stories. Anyway, I didn't love it, but I wouldn't agree with Roger Ebert's zero-star assessment, either. One weird thing that I noticed in the movie is that there was one sign (the one declaring a period of public mourning after the death of Drusilla) written entirely in English. Every other piece of writing at least appeared to be in Latin, so what was the deal here? Was the Latin consultant out of town for the day, and they had to rush that scene into production?

Here is a short article on Eric Shanower's comic book work. I've been meaning to check out his Age of Bronze, a series of graphic novels about the Trojan War. And I'm definitely getting Adventures in Oz, since I seem to have misplaced my copies of Eric's Oz graphic novels. I'm not sure whether I'll want the limited edition. I usually steer clear of things like that, since they're often just the same thing with an extra illustration and a numbered plate, but I understand that there's going to be a fair amount of extra material in this one. Perhaps some of that material will also be in the regular edition, though. I'll have to find out the details closer to the publication date.

And here's a survey that I got from [livejournal.com profile] 3x1minus1:

1. How many keys are on your keychain?
4

2. What makeup do you wear on a daily basis?
None

3. Is your AIM away message on?
Not now. I pretty much never bother turning IM on at Beth's, since she's usually the only person I talk to on there. That's not to say that I would MIND talking to anyone else (hint, hint).

4. If you could eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I realize it's trite and childish, but I think I would have to say pizza. If I got bored of it, I could always go for one of those kinds with the weird toppings, like they have at Peace A Pizza.

5. What curse word do you use the most?
I'll have to agree with sarah that "the all-purpose 'fuck' is quite useful."

6. Do you own an iPod?
Nope.

7. Who on your Myspace "Top 8" do you talk to the most?
Dorothea

8. What time is your alarm clock set for?
It varies, but usually an hour before I have to leave for work.

9. Have you ever bid for something on eBay?
Yeah. Who hasn't?

10. Do you wear flip-flops even when its cold outside?
I don't wear flip-flops even when it's WARM outside.

11. Where do you buy your groceries from?
Whatever store I happen to be passing, usually. That's probably ShurFine more often than not. I have bonus cards from five different grocery stores on my keychain, so I'm ready for just about anything. {g}

12. Would you rather take the picture or be in the picture?
Do I have to do either?

13. What was the last movie you watched?
Read the first paragraph again, genius.

14. Do any of your friends have children?
Well, at least one person on my LJ friends list does.

15. If you won the lottery, what's the first thing you would buy?
I'd buy all the girls on my block a color TV and a bottle of French perfume. No, seriously, it would almost certainly be food.

16. Anyone ever call you lazy?
Yeah, not least of all myself.

17. Do you ever take medication to help you fall asleep faster?
No.

18. What CD is currently in your CD player?

Neither. I don't drink milk.

20. Has anyone told you a secret this week?
If I TOLD you, it wouldn't be a SECRET, would it?

21. When was the last time someone hit on you?
When Beth and I went to see 8 Mile a few years ago, the girl at the ticket counter carded me. That was when I still had long hair in my ID photo, and the girl said I looked cuter with it, or something like that.

22. What did you have for dinner?
Last night, I had kind of a hodge-podge of things. I had some leftover pizza, and then some chicken nuggets from Wendy's.

I don't know that I ever do.

24. What color is your car?
Green

25. Can you whistle?
No, not at all. I can't blow bubblegum bubbles, either. I can touch my nose with my tongue, though. Does that count for anything?

Not sure about a movie, but I still like those animated specials they show every year.

27. Do you make your own jewelry?
No

28. Have you ever participated in a protest?
no

29. Who was the last person to call you?
Beth

30. What is your favorite ride at an amusement park?
I think it would have to be Nitro, at Six Flags Great Adventure

31. Where's your favorite place to vacation?
I don't know. I don't really get out that much. Honestly, I don't usually enjoy leaving home for long periods of time, but there are certainly some places I'd like to visit.

Yeah, you could say that.

37. How many siblings do you have?
Two

42. When was the last time you laughed so hard your sides hurt?
I can't remember, but I know I laughed really hard at the opening scene of the FCC episode of Family Guy when I first saw it. They just reran that one on Sunday, but I didn't laugh as hard at it this time around.

43. What movies do you know every line to?
I don't know about EVERY line, but I think The Wizard of Oz and UHF are the two I'm closest to achieving that with.

44. Do you own any band t-shirts?
At this point, I think most of my T-shirts are band ones.

45. What is your favorite candle scent?
Not sure. I don't do much candle-smelling, honestly.

47. When was your last plane ride?

I've never heard of this porntastic Caligula.

Chances are, I'm stealing this survey.

I've never heard of this porntastic Caligula.

I hadn't heard about it until recently. It was Beth who added it to the Netflix queue. I do remember seeing some of the Caligula scenes from I, Claudius, which they used to (and possibly still do) show on PBS all the time.

>>Anyway, I didn't love it, but I wouldn't agree with Roger Ebert's zero-star assessment, either.<<

As I was reading this, I thought, "wasn't that one of the movies mentioned in Robert Ebert's I Hated, Hated, Hated This Movie book?" Sure enough.

--

The mentions of the sex scenes in this movie reminds me of when I saw Y Tu Mama Tambien on IFC 2 years ago, and I uh, watched it for the sex scenes. I then got it on dvd just to uh, watch the sex scenes again, but then I realized what a nice movie it was once I got used to the sex scenes.

Apparently Ebert thought the movie was "sickening, utterly worthless, shameful trash," to which my response is basically, "It's a movie about CALIGULA. What did you expect, tea parties and flying kites in the park?" While there was a lot of sex in it, I tend to doubt anyone would watch it to get off on it. But you never know.

It's a good movie. I guess I was just so enamoured over the sex scenes at first was because I'd never seen a _sex scene_ in a movie before.

Well, since I was, like, three years old when it was first released, I couldn't very well see it then. {g}
