[livejournal.com profile] bethje and I watched the 1989 Tim Burton Batman last night. I'd seen parts of it, but never the whole thing all the way through. The only one of the Batman films that I did see in its entirety was Batman Returns. I saw parts of Batman Forever on TV, and a few seconds of Batman and Robin when I worked at the movie theater. I had actually wanted to see Batman Begins at the movies, but never got around to it. I don't think it's playing anymore, is it?

Anyway, the movie was pretty good. Batman himself really wasn't developed that much, but then, I think it was Jack Nicholson who got top billing for the movie. He was quite successful in portraying the Joker, but then, I don't think anyone has ever questioned Nicholson's ability to play a crazy guy. {g} I get the impression that it was poor casting that marred some of the later Batman movies. The Riddler was pretty much just Jim Carrey playing himself, and while I haven't actually seen Batman and Robin, the commercials were enough to convince me how terrible Arnold Schwarzenegger was as Mr. Freeze. I'm not that familiar with the Batman universe in general, but I occasionally used to watch the animated series, and the Riddler and Mr. Freeze were absolutely nothing like they were in the movies.
