[livejournal.com profile] bethje and I watched the 1989 Tim Burton Batman last night. I'd seen parts of it, but never the whole thing all the way through. The only one of the Batman films that I did see in its entirety was Batman Returns. I saw parts of Batman Forever on TV, and a few seconds of Batman and Robin when I worked at the movie theater. I had actually wanted to see Batman Begins at the movies, but never got around to it. I don't think it's playing anymore, is it?

Anyway, the movie was pretty good. Batman himself really wasn't developed that much, but then, I think it was Jack Nicholson who got top billing for the movie. He was quite successful in portraying the Joker, but then, I don't think anyone has ever questioned Nicholson's ability to play a crazy guy. {g} I get the impression that it was poor casting that marred some of the later Batman movies. The Riddler was pretty much just Jim Carrey playing himself, and while I haven't actually seen Batman and Robin, the commercials were enough to convince me how terrible Arnold Schwarzenegger was as Mr. Freeze. I'm not that familiar with the Batman universe in general, but I occasionally used to watch the animated series, and the Riddler and Mr. Freeze were absolutely nothing like they were in the movies.

I've seen all of the Batman movies, and I can agree with you. I feel like the first one was very well made overall with some problems. The second was still quite good, but the wonderful Catwoman performances couldn't detract from really disturbing Penguin bits (is it neccessary for us to watch him bite off someone's nose?). After that, it just got more campy until Batman and Robin, which just physically hurt to watch. The exception to the trend was Batman Begins. That really was an incredibly made movie apart from a few minor plot holes (such as the fact the the principle evil plot does not seem to conform to the physiical laws of our universe). Other than that, I really loved it.

Oh, on a side note, Nicholson holds the record for the most any actor has ever been paid for one role. When he signed his contract for Batman, rather than take a flat payment, he negotiated to get a percentage of all profits on the movie. Thus, he's still being paid for his performance.

I remember the 1989 Batman was the first VHS movie ever purchased by my family (around the time we bought our first vcr). My dad bought it, but I never remembered sitting through it.

I think we sent that and a whole bunch of other movies to him when he was out to sea with the navy a few years later, I don't think they made it back home.
