Hey, I managed to raise the steering wheel on my rental car, so it doesn't brush against my legs anymore! Go me! I only wish I could solve the login problem with the computer at work.

Hmm...aren't facts 2 and 3 somewhat contradictory to one another?
While looking up information on the infamous "Justin Bailey" password in Metroid (which someone claims is actually "just in bailey," meaning Samus is dressed only in her swimsuit; I think that's a bit of a stretch), I came upon some information on the old Captain N: The Game Master cartoon. I used to watch that and the various Super Mario Bros. cartoons all the time. The list of changes from the actual video games on the wikipedia page is pretty accurate. In the Mario cartoons, the animation quality was really lousy (right down to sometimes having the wrong character's mouth move during dialogue), but the character design was pretty much true to the games. They kept the early design for Bowser in the later cartoons, so he was bald in the show even when he was consistently shown with red hair in the games, but that's pretty minor. I think the voices were pretty decent, too. I can't really imagine Bowser sounding different from his cartoon incarnation. I have no idea why Mouser had a Russian accent, but I guess it worked. In Captain N, though, they changed EVERYTHING. Sometimes it was just for comic effect or to make someone more interesting, like with Mother Brain or Simon Belmont. But other times there's really no sense to it. I mean, just look at what they did to poor Mega Man! And even though Mother Brain (voiced by Levi Stubbs from the Four Tops, who also voiced Audrey II in the movie musical version of Little Shop of Horrors) appeared in every episode, Samus never appeared, apparently because the original writer had never heard of her. Contrary to wikipedia says, I believe Metroids DID appear in one show, although they were too small and didn't float around.

Date: 2006-01-15 03:19 am (UTC)Have you ever seen the Mega Man cartoon that used to air on Sunday mornings? Mega Man definitely had a better voice in that show, but the show was kind of lame overall. Among other things, everybody kept calling him "Mega," as if that were a valid nickname; and he was constantly saying, "Now I've got your power!" (And he didn't even need to defeat the robot masters to use their powers, just TOUCH them.) And the theme song was just a few words repeated over and over again, like it was Power Rangers or something. :P

I'm going to start saying that to people after I touch them.

Date: 2006-01-15 12:40 am (UTC)I think it's kind of funny that the writer had never heard of Samus, but had heard of Mother Brain. Although I seem to remember there actually being an episode of Captain N that HAD Samus in it later, but it was probably near the end of the series. IIRC, I remember being annoyed that it was at least voiced by a guy, and I don't think they had the same reveal.

Date: 2006-01-15 03:27 am (UTC)Well, it's certainly possible that the decision to use Mother Brain as the main villain was that of someone else who was more familiar with Metroid. Also, the interview gives the impression that the writer didn't know all that much about video games, so I guess it's possible that he saw the mention of Mother Brain at the beginning of the game, but didn't know who the character was he was controlling. Who knows?

I'm pretty sure I've seen every episode, and I don't think Samus ever appeared. From what I've heard, she WAS in the Captain N comic books, but my only exposure to those was paging through one issue at a store.
